What is DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance)?

    Hi,

I know that DLNA stands for Digital Living Network Alliance and something related to network connections but I don't know much about it. So can you please explain me, what is DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) in detail? And also which multimedia devices involved in the DLNA standard ???

DLNA is a standard for compatibility between systems and electronic devices that manage data (especially multimedia). The DLNA standard can share data between devices that include this certificate through wireless connection, Ethernet or via the mains. The DLNA standard requires that devices can share data under this technology must be certified, which means that should accompany them factory electronics and relevant settings.

In a network with DLNA can find two types of devices: clients and servers. Servers (Digital Media Servers or DMS) are those that have content available to offer, while customers (Digital Media Players or WMD) are those in which we can enjoy that content. As an example we would have a DVR server or your computer as an example of customers could be a TV, a console or mobile phone.

Within a DLNA network, you can find the two basic types of devices, client and server. Servers (Digital Media Servers) have all the content, while clients (Digital Media Players) are the ones who "read". DLNA uses a subset of UPnP (Universal Plug-and-play) allowing to locate and connect the other devices on the local network. To which must be added that does not define a user interface, so that each device has its own, creating some complications in this regard to disadvantaged users.

One of the most common cases is to use your home PC as a server pre-configured from the Windows Media Player, and then from the video game console (PS3) to search for media servers to access the multimedia content our computer. No doubt much better and faster to walk with a USB hard drive with the content up and down. The bad part of all this is that the system implements a DRM content protection (with rights), and some may not be playable file from the client side.

To combine all the technology in the common information space will be needed DLNA-server and network music player. They will provide a link between the data source and reproducing equipment. While DLNA-compatibility is not too much advertised, but such devices are on sale - to take at least well-known gaming consoles, Sony Playstation and Microsoft Xbox 360, smartphone Nokia N95 8 Gb and Samsung i780, Blu-ray-player Pioneer BDP-LX70, networked media server ZyXEL NSA220 or digital camera Sony DCS-G1.
