Internet not working on Dell Dimension 2400

Hello there, I have a Dell Dimension 2400 desktop computer which has Windows XP operating system installed on it. The computer has an Internet connection which is provided by a Beetel router. From past few days, Internet is not working on Dell Dimension 2400. Whenever I try to access Internet through the browser, it gives an error message saying "Connection Timed out". I am using Mozilla firefox as the default browser. I am not that good at computers and hence I am not able to figure out what is causing such problems. Therefore if anybody else is facing similar problems, then please share some information.

First of all check if the router is configured properly or not. As the router is providing the essential bandwidth required by the computer, it is very important that the router is configured properly. If the router is not configured properly then you will not be able to access Internet on the computer. To check if the router is configured properly, login to the router and open the configuration page. Check all the settings of the router, if there are any changes to be made then do the necessary changes and save the configuration settings. Restart the router and see if the computer is able to access Internet or not.

I think the problem is with the version of the browser which is installed on the computer. Every application that is installed on the computer has lot of files associated to it. If any of the files associated to the browser gets corrupt or is missing on the system then the browser will not work properly. Replacing the files which are corrupt or missing on the system will solve the problem. Remove the currently installed version of the browser from the computer and remove all the files/keys from the computer. Once all the traces of the application is removed, reinstall the application and see if the browser is working properly.

Have you tried using some other browser? There are lot of browsers which are available online. Google Chrome, Safari, Opera are few of them. All the browsers which are mentioned have more or less similar functions and hence can be used instead of Mozilla firefox. Therefore download one of the mentioned browser and then install it on the computer. Once installed, check if you are able to access Internet on the computer. If the newly installed browser works properly then the installed version of Mozilla is corrupt and hence should be removed from the computer.

Check if the drivers for the network adapter are installed and working properly. All the devices which are connected to the computer, require a set of drivers to be installed on the computer. Drivers act as a mediator between the operating system and the device. If the appropriate drivers are not installed then the device will not work properly. To check if the drivers are installed and working properly, go to device manager and highlight the network adapter. If there are any caution signs then follow the troubleshooting procedure. If the troubleshooting does not help then you will have to update the drivers for the network adapter. Updating the drivers for the network adapter will solve the problem.

Network interface card is responsible for establishing and maintaining the connection to the network. If the network card is not working properly then the computer will not be able to access network. All the network cards have a software interface programmed which can be used for testing of the Network card. To test the NIC, click on Start menu and open Run. Type "Ping 127.0.0.1" and hit enter. Now check if there are any errors in data sent and received. Ideally there should not be any errors in data sent or data received. If there are any errors, then you will have to replace the Network interface card.
