I am from software development and need to know about some terms regarding the development.I have some confusion about theapplication programming interface,Is it any application,environment for developing application or anything else? what is the purpose of using this.

Is it used as a tool for another software,please share the knowledge with me.

The Application programming interface is abbreviated as API,It is the group of routines, protocols, and tools for development of applications softwares.
An API provides so many facilities which comes easier to build the program using all the building blocks. And then the programmer puts the blocks together.

There are so many operating environments named as MS-Windows, allows to use the API so that the developers can be able to create the applications within the operating system environment. Although APIs are developed for application developers.

The API allows to the developers to use pre-build functions to communicate with the operating environment.
