Internet works on Macbook but not on Windows 7 laptop

Hello there, I have a Macbook Pro which is installed with Mac OS X 10.6 snow leopard and a Sony laptop which is installed with Windows 7 computer. On this laptop I had Windows XP installed before upgrading to Windows 7. Internet connection is provided and shared by using Linksys Wireless router. The problem which I am facing is that Internet works on Macbook but not on Windows 7 laptop. The same laptop used to connect to network when it was running on Windows XP. I cant figure out what is causing the problem and hence need your help. Any suggestions/solutions are more than welcome. Thanks in advance.

I would suggest you to check the configuration of the router first. The configuration of the router sometime changes when any device is added or removed from the network. If the configuration of the router changes then some of the devices will not be able to connect to the router or the network. To check the configuration of the router, login to the router using the default IP address of the router. Once logged in, go to the configuration page. Contact your ISP and get the proper settings which are required for the router. Check the configuration of the router and if there are any changes to be made, do it and save the configuration. Once the configuration is saved, reboot the router. After rebooting see if the problem persists or not.

Sometimes the encryption of the network does not allow the devices to connect to the router. Some versions of the operating systems do not support all the encryption types of the network. If such situation occurs then the computer wont be able to connect to the router. You will have to either remove the encryption or you will have to change the encryption which is supported by both the operating system. To change the encryption, you will have to login to the router and then remove the encryption of the network. Once the encryption is removed or changed, you will not face the same problem again.

Check if the drivers for the network adapter are installed and working properly on the laptop. The devices which are connected to the computer require a set of drivers which are to be installed on the computer so that the device works properly. Drivers are mediators between the operating system and the device. If the appropriate drivers for the device are not installed, then the device will not work properly. To check if the drivers are installed and working properly, right click on My computer and select Device manager. Highlight the installed Network adapter and if there are any caution signs then follow the troubleshooting procedure. If troubleshooting does not help, then try updating the drivers for the network adapter and see if the laptop can connect to the router.

Try disabling the IPv6 support of Windows 7 and then try to connect the laptop to the router. The default IP version of Windows 7 is IPv6 while the default IP version of Windows XP is IPv4. As the laptop was running on Windows XP before, the network must be assigning IPv4 address to all the devices which must be conflicting with IPv6 support of Windows 7. Therefore you will have to disable the IPv6 support of Windows 7. To do that, open the network configuration wizard and open the LAN properties. Go to TCP/IP properties and remove the check mark from the option which says "Enable IPv6 support" and apply the settings. Now check if you are able to connect the router and laptop or not.
