I need some details on DNSSEC implementation

I need a detailed description on DNSSEC. What is it and for what does it stands for. It is a prime requirement for internet technology. If yes then why so. I think this term belongs to some domain protection service. But I am not sure about the same and that creates doubts in my mind. I am also not so advance in this but my job is related.
