    From Pidgin help support:

If you used Pidgin 2.6.4 with the proper libpurple 2.6.4 you should not have had a problem--if all that was correct, and you still had the problem, then you have a firewall or proxy that interferes with the MSN protocol and tries to force us to speak either MSNP13 or MSNP8, neither of which we support.

I don't have any issue in using Pidgin on MSN protocol:

    Server:

    messenger.hotmail.com

    HTTP server method:

    gateway.messenger.hotmail.com

May be you have an older version 2.3.1 to upgrade to the newest and if you connect, I have the version 2.6.2 with Ubuntu 9.10 without problems. You have some weird at pidgin addon or an old version? (It is rare that just does not support MSN) .
