What is Google URL Shortener ?

Excuse me, I have been using the Internet from last 6 to 7 years. I have Internet Explorer 8 on which i have downloaded the Google toolbar. I think i was much familiar with the whole Google toolbar but recently i have heard something like Google URL Shortener. Can anybody tell me what is it and for what purpose you can use it ?

Google has recently launched a new version of Google toolbar which includes URL shortening service called as Google URL Shortener. Basically it shrinks up the long URL in to shortest line of characters which will be easy to share with others. It totally depends on words, status updates or commonly used names for a particular url etc.

But sometimes it is also useful to fit your url in 140 characters as it is needed at many places for example in Short Messages Service. URL shortener loses the link informations but it might happen that the user is getting on the same url every time which can not be intention of many users.

First of all I would like to warn all the people who use URL shortner. Because it is so easy to have been searched on websites which may have some kind of viruses. It has happened with many times that i have used this service on several websites but then my anti virus system found some trojan on that url however it was not the same url which i have entered there.
