How set up Apple Mail client to work with Gmail

I am a Mac OS X user. Basically i use Gmail as my default mail client but due to some reason and multiple email accounts, i decided to set up my Apple Mail client to work with Gmail and all other accounts. But first of all i need to go with Gmail. To be frank, i have no idea of doing so as this is the first time i am going for POP settings and all. So i request you guys to please make me know how can i set up Apple Mail client to work with Gmail ? Help appreciated...

For making Gmail to work with any other mail client, first of all you need to enable POP in Gmail. To do so, just go through these steps:-

• Sign in to Gmail with your Id and Password, Click Settings at the top of any Gmail page.
• Click Forwarding and POP/IMAP.
• Select Enable POP for all mail or Enable POP for mail that arrives from now on.
• Choose the action you'd like your Gmail messages to take after they are accessed with POP.
• Configure your POP client and click Save Changes.

Once you have finished enabling POP in your Gmail account, just follow these steps properly to set up your Apple Mail client to work with Gmail:-

1. Open Apple Mail.
   
   
2. Click Mail, and select Preferences...
   
   
3. Open the Accounts tab, and click the plus sign (+) along the bottom to add a new account.
   
   
4. Enter your name in the Full Name: field.
   
   
5. Enter your Gmail address in the Email Address: field.
   
   
6. Enter your Gmail password in the Password: field.
   
   
7. Check the box next to Automatically set up your account.
   
   
8. Click on Create.

I really appreciate your quick responses, friends.. Thanks for that. I enabled POP of my Gmail account and followed all the steps that you have mentioned. Every gone fine, but now when i am trying to open my Apple Mail client, it is giving me some error saying, "The connection to the server 'smtp.gmail.com' on port 25 timed out." Why is that so,, did i made some mistake ? Please help..

I am not sure but i think that you have made some mistake anywhere in settings. To better diagnose the problem, you'll need to run a telnet test, which will check that your computer can contact our POP servers. Here is how to do that:-

• Click the Macintosh Hard Drive icon, and open the Applications folder.
• Open Utilities, and select Terminal.
• Type 'telnet pop.gmail.com 995' in the prompt window and press Enter.
• Note whether the prompt clears or not.
• Depending on what port you're using to send, type 'telnet smtp.gmail.com 25' or 'telnet smtp.gmail.com 587' in the prompt window and press Enter.
• Note whether the prompt clears or not.
• Close the prompt window.

If the telnet test clears, the server errors you're experiencing are most often temporary and will resolve themselves within 24 hours. And if it is opposite than your network is blocking access to Gmail's POP servers. Please contact your local network administrator or your Internet Service Provider's customer support department for further instructions.
