Which version of firefox you are using? its not the case with with the latest firefox version that i'm using. I'm using firefox 3.5. Update your firefox version. And also when you opens multiple windows firefox usage more memory. Its totally depends on your usage and on the content which firefox is holding.

    Re: Firefox memory leak

For those who remain concerned, here's how the feature works. Firefox has a preference browser.sessionhistory.max_total_viewers which by default is set to -1. When set to this value, Firefox calculates the amount of memory in the system, according to this breakdown:

    RAM -----------Number of Cached Pages
    32MB ----------- 0
    64MB ----------- 1
    128MB ---------- 2
    256MB----------- 3
    512MB ----------- 5
    1GB ----------- 8
    2GB ----------- 8
    4GB ----------- 8
No more than 8 pages are ever cached in this fashion, by default. If you set this preference to another value, e.g. 25, 25 pages will be cached. You can set it to 0 to disable the feature, but your page load performance will suffer.

I was also having same problem with my Firefox browser. Do the following:
    • Type about:config into your address bar in Firefox.
    • Create a new integer value (right click, new > integer). Name it as browser.cache.memory.capacity and give a low number for its value (Save it afterwards)
    • Search for the value browser.cache.disk.capacity and set its value to 15000 if you are using 1G of RAM.
    • Search for network.prefetch-next and set its value to false.

This should solve the memory leak.
