Firefox for Windows 98

I don't know why but one of my friend is still using Windows 98. He prefer Internet Explorer as he default browser but from last few days he is trying to get Firefox for his windows but the browser is not supporting the system. Is there any Firefox version that can support Windows 98? Please help.

Re: Firefox for Windows 98

You can make run FireFox 2.0 on Windows 98 by making and getting things working. For that you need to Update your Common Controls Library, Apply the Distributed Component Object Model, etc. Here are step-by-step instructions for getting things working:-
  • Update your Common Controls Library using 50comupd.exe from Microsoft

  • Apply the Distributed Component Object Model (DCOM) Update for Windows 98

  • Apply the Microsoft Libraries Update for Windows 95 (Note: This file no longer exists. It's named SPEU.exe so you may be able to find it with a web search.) or for Windows 98. (You will need to reboot once this is installed)

  • Now download a standard Firefox installer.

  • Run Firefox Setup 1.5.x.x.exe and install as normal.

  • Once you get to the point where Firefox launches for the first time, an error -- "This application has performed an illegal operation" -- will occur as Firefox attempts to start its Import functionality (which does not work in Windows 95). Just click close.

  • Reboot your PC to return your operating system to a stable state

  • Now, launch Firefox again using your Start Menu shortcut and all should be well!

I don't think and Firefox version will support Windows 98, because as per i have seen the minimum system requirements to run Firefox is:-
  1. Windows 2000
  2. Windows XP
  3. Windows Server 2003
  4. Windows Vista
  5. Pentium 233 MHz (Recommended: Pentium 500MHz or greater)
  6. 64 MB RAM (Recommended: 128 MB RAM or greater)
  7. 52 MB hard drive space

Re: Firefox for Windows 98

Firefox 3 does not work on Windows 98. This is because it requires some operating system features that are not present in Windows 9x. It would be neat if there is a parking garage for old versions of them add ons with old versions compatible for those of us who don 't need to be intercepting edge.
