Dell Dimension 8110 cannot connect Internet

I have Dell Dimension 8110 with onboard Intel chip and ethernet port. The computer is about five months old. Everything was working and performing well, until yesterday. Today when I turned ON my computer, it wasn't able to connect to the internet. I also checked the port behind, it does not light up. What should I do ?

If you have got more than one port, then try to connect the internet cable to a different port on your router. You can use different cable for this, because if you've got different cable, that would help to easily indicate that there's either something wrong with the NIC or the router port. One thing you can do is switch the ends of the cable, so that the end that was connected to the computer is now plugged into the router (and vice versa).

Since everything was working fine until previous day, I think it's possibly a virus issue. Scan and Run an Anti-Virus and see..

Goto the command prompt by Start > Run and type 'ping www.google.com' (without quotes) and post the output here as well as the output from ipconfig...

Is the Internet directly connected to your Dell computer, and how is your network setup ?

Is it Modem >>> Router >>> Computer or Modem >>> Computer1 >>> Computer2 ?? Actually, I need to know whether you are using a Router or not ?

Go to Start | select Run | type 'cmd' without the quotes
type ipconfig

What message are you getting ?
