The default way to change this is in Tools>>Options>>Tabs. You should be able to choose to open a new page in a new window, current tab, or new tab.

If that isn't working you may want to download an extension to take care of it. I use Tab Mix Plus.

On the top of the page click on the "tools" button and go all the way down to "options" then click on the tabs button on the top. Set it to open in new tab instead of new window then hit ok. you shouldn't have that problem anymore
