Making Yahoo Mail your default mail application in Mozilla Firefox:
Click on Options. Then from pull down menu select Yahoo Mail as default browser and you are done.

    In Internet Explorer:
    • Press Start on desktop
    • Select Settings
    • Go to Control Panel
    • Select Internet Option
    • Click the Programs tab
    • Click the E-mail pull-down menu, and select Yahoo Mail
    • Click OK.

There is a little utility called YPops that you will need. There might be something on the web that explains how to configure this, but you will need it before you go anywhere. Check this link: http://ypopsemail.com/

Set the Default Email Account in Windows Mail or Outlook Express. To make an email account the default in Windows Mail or Outlook Express:
    • Select Tools and Accounts from the menu.
    • On the Mail tab, highlight the desired account
    • Click Set as Default
    • Now click Close

In IE, programs, you would choose Outlook Express. Also check off Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is the default browser. Then set up your Yahoo account in OE. Tools-->Accounts-->Add. Follow the wizard.
For server configuration, you would enter the following, if you pay for Yahoo in the USA.
    POP3 (receiving mail): pop.mail.yahoo.com
    SMTP(sending mail): smtp.mail.yahoo.com
But your ISP may not allow using the yahoo servers. In which case you would use your ISP server for SMTP. Get that configuration from them. As an example, if your ISP was NetZero it would look like this smtp.netzero.com
