My most current backup of my emails was exported from Outlook 2000 into a backup.pst file. I can't figure out a way to open this pst file.
If I could convert it to dbx files then I can get Windows Mail to import it?

I decided to install the Office 2007 Trial and then I can convert my PST that I made with Outlook 2000. I installed Office 2000 in Vista Ultimate, only to find that I was getting the wab.dll not found error. If I truely like what I see with 2007 I may even upgrade.
Make sure you picked a version of Office that includes Outlook.
Not all of them do.
Outlook 2000 needs the Windows Address Book files (wab.dll), which is not found in Vista. Therefore, Outlook 2000 will usually be able to send and receive emails only in Vista, but will not be able to access an addressbook.
Outlook 2003 works fine on Vista, and so does Outlook 2007. What I did was to delete Outlook 2000 completely, EXCEPT for the .pst file. Then installed 2003, and was able to import the .pst file into 2003 without a problem. I assume 2007 will allow you to do the same thing.

Correct and I used the Professional Trial, of course 750mb download(@10mb was fast) and a long install and update on Vista was a bit of bother but now I have my old saved messages in Windows Mail. I also made sure to Export the Messages from Windows Mail to a backup folder in a non-PST format. I like the new Office 2007 so far but not sure an upgrade costing $250 or so is worth it. I got Office 2000 Professional free from Microsoft as a promotion years ago.
Maybe the pst file is damaged or something. You can use Inbox Repair tool which is used to repair corrupted file of pst. To run Inbox repair tool fallow the steps:
- Click on start goes to the search then click on files or folders option.
- In search box type scanpst.exe.
- Double click on the scanpst.exe file to open the inbox repair tool.
- Then enter the location of Pst file and its name or browse it for the path.
- Then start to repair.
This way you can repair your pst file. But if your file is badly damaged you may not able to repair it. At that time you can use some software. You can try a tool called Advanced Outlook Repair to repair your PST file. It is a powerful tool to recover messages, folders and other objects from corrupt or damaged Microsoft Outlook PST files. It's homepage is http://www.datanumen.com/aor/ Hope this is useful.
Thanks, that worked for everything but my contacts. I was able to export those to a csv file and import them successfully.
