I have not found a way to read the source of the
.smtp or email message. If the source file were
filtered into a human readable form which could
be reviewed by the recipient, then tampering which
has not yet been studied by the virus companies
could be eliminated. Otherwise, any email with active
components would have be quarantined, to ensure
that the email is without any malware, until the virus
companies have had a chance to develop defenses.

Only if an email were deemed urgent, would this precaution
need to be taken; some kind of handshake should be available
so that emails from unknown sources can be eliminated.
If not automatic, a reply asking for verification from whoever
sent the email could ask for verification.
