Enabling the HTTPS setting in Gmail

If you sign in to Gmail via a non-secure Internet connection, like a public wireless or non-encrypted network, your Google account may be more vulnerable to hijacking. Non-secure networks make it easier for someone to impersonate you and gain full access to your Google account, including any sensitive data it may contain like bank statements or online log-in credentials. We recommend selecting the 'Always use https' option in Gmail any time your network may be non-secure. HTTPS, or Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure, is a secure protocol that provides authenticated and encrypted communication.

To enable this feature in Gmail:

• Sign in to Gmail.
• Click Settings at the top of any Gmail page.
• Set 'Browser Connection' to 'Always use https.'
• Click Save Changes.
• Reload Gmail.

Please note that selecting 'Always use https' will prevent you from accessing Gmail via HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol). In addition, it may make Gmail a bit slower. If you trust the security of your network, you can turn this feature off at any time.

If you use a public computer to check your email, it's also important to end each of your Gmail sessions by clicking Sign out at the top of any Gmail page and to close all Gmail browser windows.

There are instructions for ENABLING the HTTPS setting, but how to DISABLE https? I want the faster http-connection. The Settings option "Don't always use https" has no effect. Logging to Gmail always jumps to https-connection.

It will always jump to https when you log in. When you send the password, gmail switches to https to encrypt the information. After logging in, you can simply delete the "s" from https.

you just reverse the steps in your gmail setting by click Don`t
always use https:// but when you sign in your password your sign in will always will be https:/// then when it go to your inbox then it will be in
http:///mail.google.com/mail/s/

I removed through Firefox's menu Privacy -> Show Cookies -> Search function every row which hinted to Google or Gmail - there were really many rows. Then back to Gmail: no effect: again and always https:

At my other computers the address remains http, so there is something in this one computer lurking somewhere which causes this. And like I told earlier, I have the option "Don't always use https" ON.

Guessing the result beforehand I tested with Greasemonkey by commanding it to swith to http-inbox-adress when it saw the https- inbox address: it resulted to endless loop when Greasemonkey and Gmail wrestled with each other.
