Comparison between SGML and XML

Hello Guys,

I am learning XML language since one month. Now I have little-bit knowledge about the XML. But still I am not getting the difference between SGML and XML. I don't have any idea if both these language comprises similar features or not. I have referred lots of XML books for this differentiation, but didn't get enough details. If you knows this differentiation between SGML and XML, then please try to share it with me. I will really appreciate you help.

Re: Comparison between SGML and XML

Hi,

SGML is nothing but the worldwide standard which is used for defining descriptions of content as well as the structure in the form of electronic documents. While the intention behind the invention XML is to maintain the important part of the SGML. I think this is the only difference between XML and SGML. XML describes structure, stores, transporting and sharing data. XML is extensible and can create his own tags based on the data processed.

Re: Comparison between SGML and XML

Standard Generalized Markup Language Language i.e SGML is a description language to tags. An SGML document must contain a reference to a DTD. XML, Standard for describing structured documents has been created from SGML. This is actually a simplified version of SGML ( "profile" of the fixed standard DTDs optional special syntax for empty elements) and more suited to the Web (native support of different international encoding).

Re: Comparison between SGML and XML

Feature common legacy of SGML that are transported to the Web Data in text mode (plain text), compatible with any what software platform. There is an application of SGML called HyTime for describing links between SGML documents. In html and GML lacks the complete separation between the three parts: the content (body), presentation (CSS) and structure (DTD).

Re: Comparison between SGML and XML

HI friend,

XML can be considered a simplified SGML or abstract, a SGML that would be affordable by ordinary webmasters. The XML extensible Markup Language is a language Html tags as it is extensible, scalable. In XML, tags are not specifically predefined. It is you who must or can define your own tags. While SGML is very professional language has the peculiarity of being very concise and very abstract. Accordingly, it is very difficult to use by ordinary mortals.

Re: Comparison between SGML and XML

XML is playing an increasingly important role in data management since it "represents one of the most secure, strongest and most flexible record, manipulate, locate and present data in different languages. It has therefore become a key element in the areas of internationalization and localization. In Localization, XML is often used, the project location contains XML elements or not. The XML files can be used as resource files for localization and almost all the tools of software localization is compatible with XML.
