The connection to the Remote Web Workplace is frequently interruptedor lost.

Hi
I have 4 remote computers at two different locations with two
different ISP that have the same problem.
When logged into RWW, the connection is frequently interrupted and I
am disconnected. The amount of time before disconnection varies from
a couple of minutes to at most 30 minutes. I log in with public or
shared computer box UNCHECKED.
The OS of the remote computers are both XP (SP1) and Vista so it does
not appear to be an OS caused problem.

I have read many posts on the internet with people experiencing the
same problem. Does anyone have a solution or recommendation as to
where to start?
Thanks much

Hi:

Are the connections failing all at the same time? That is, if user1 is
bumped, is user2, 3, 4 also bumped?

RE: The connection to the Remote Web Workplace is frequently interrupted or lost.

Hello Customer,

Thank you for posting here. Let's also thank Larry for the good question.

According to your description, I understand that your RWW connection from
remote clients will be interrupted randomly. If I have misunderstood the
problem, please don't hesitate to let me know.

First, please let me know that:
1. Are the connections failing all at the same time? (As Larry asked)
2. Do you have the same issue when you access OWA or companyweb from remote
clients?
3. Do you have the same issue when you access RWW from internal clients?

Based on my research, I suggest we try the following steps to see if we can
resolve this issue:

1. Please ensure your SBS Internet connection is stable. You can contact
your ISP to confirm it.

2. As I know, some router or ADSL modem will have session timeout
configuration options, please try to contact your hardware vendor to check
it. Or you can try to replace the router before SBS with another one from
another manufacturer to test this issue.

3 Please check Remote Web Workplace timeout settings on SBS:

The time out values (in minutes) are configurable in the registry, at:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SmallBusinessServer\RemoteUserPortal\P
ublicTimeOut
REG_DWORD: 20 (Default)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SmallBusinessServer\RemoteUserPortal\T
rustedTimeOut
REG_DWORD: 120 (Default)

The PublicTimeOut is used when the user checks the box for "I'm using a
public or shared computer" on the RWW logon page. The TrustedTimeOut is
used when the user unchecks this checkbox. You can change the time out
settings here.

4. Please try to rerun the CEICW on SBS to configure the network.

Go through the follow KB and rerun CEICW carefully.

How to configure Internet access in Windows Small Business Server 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/825763

Detailed steps for your reference:

a. On the SBS 2003 Server open the Server Management console. Go to
Standard Management\To Do List.

b. Click the "Connect to the Internet" link.

c. When navigating to the Firewall page, select "Enable firewall" and click
Next.

d. On the "Services Configuration" page, select all the items and then
click Next.

e. On the "Web Services Configuration" page, make sure "Allow access to the
entire Web site from the Internet" is selected. If you select "Allow access
to only the following Web site services from the Internet", make sure all
items in the list are selected. Click Next.

f. On the "Web Server Certificate" page, choose to create a new Web server
certificate and then type the public domain name (your public DNS name)
that you will use to access OWA and RWW (for example, if your public domain
name that you use to access the sites is www.xyz.com, you should type
www.xyz.com as the new certificate name).

g. Go through the remaining steps.

5. This issue may relate to the new network feature of windows server 2003
sp2. I suggest you perform the following steps:

1) Update the network adapter drivers
Contact the network adapter manufacturer or contact the original equipment
manager (OEM) for the computer to determine whether an updated network
adapter driver is available. You must have drivers that are compatible with
NDIS 5.2 or with a later version.
2) Modify the registry to disable Receive Side Scaling
a. Click Start, click Run, type regedit , and then click OK.
b. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters
c. If the EnableRSS registry entry does not exist, create it. To do this,
follow these steps:
a) On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
b) In the New Value #1 box, type EnableRSS , and then press ENTER.

d. Right-click EnableRSS, and then click Modify.
e. In the Value data box, type 0 (zero), and then click OK.
f. Exit Registry Editor.

3) Disable offloading support
a. Click Start, click Run, type regedit , and then click OK.
b. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters
c. In the details pane, right-click EnableTCPA, and then click Modify.

Note: If the EnableTCPA registry entry does not exist, create it. To do
this, follow these steps:
a) On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
b) In the New Value #1 box, type EnableTCPA , and then press ENTER.

d. In the Value data box, type 0 (zero), and then click OK.
e. Exit Registry Editor.
f. Restart the computer.

For more information, please refer to:
You may experience network-related problems after you install Windows
Server 2003 SP2 or the Scalable Networking Pack on a Windows Server
2003-based computer
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936594

If we cannot resolve the issue after we perform the steps above, please
help me collect some information for further investigation:

Gather MPS network report on SBS:

a. Download MPSrepot_network from
http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...5-a579-30b0bd9
15706/MPSRPT_NETWORK.EXE

b. Run MPSRPT_NETWORK.exe.

c. The tool will automatically collect the information. This procedure will
take 10~15 minutes.

d. Open Windows Explorer, navigate to the folder:
%SystemRoot%\MPSReports\Network\Reports\Cab\

e. Send the .cab file directly to me at v-terliu@microsoft.com

I hope these steps will give you some help.

Thanks and have a nice day!

Best regards,

Terence Liu (MSFT)

Hi Terrence
Thanks for the reply
Unfortunately I have tried to post a reply to your and Larry's question and
I am not able to.
I click on reply and i just get a screen refresh.

But to answer your question. NO the connections are independent and fail
at different times. In fact, at any one single time, there is only one
person logged on remotely.

Terence
I finally had a chance to complete the recommended steps you outlined in
your post.
The only thing I found that needed attention was the network card and its
driver. It was very old. I updated the driver which had no effect. We
still am unable to stay logged on before we get kicked out for more than 15
minutes or so. It varies from 2 minutes to up to a half hour max.

Attached is the cab report file as requested.
I patiently await further input you could provide. I am anxious to get
this problem resolved.
Thanks, in advance, for your help.

RE: The connection to the Remote Web Workplace is frequently interrupted or lost.

Hello Homer,

Thank you for your update.

1. Do you only update the NIC driver and ignore other suggestions in my
first reply?

2. Do you have the same issue when you access OWA or companyweb from remote
clients?

3. Do you have the same issue when you access RWW from internal clients?

4. I suggest you to reinstall RWW on SBS:

A. Open Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs.
B. Click Change/Remove for Windows Small Business Server 2003 in Add or
Remove Programs:
C. Click "Windows Small Business Server 2003" and click on "Change/Remove".
D. Follow the setup prompts until you reach the "Component Selection"
dialog screen.
E. Set the "Server Tools" to "Reinstall", and set all its subcomponents to
"None (Installed)".
F. Complete the setup wizard. You'll be prompted for CD3, point it to the
SBS cd3 folder.

After we reinstall the RWW, we need to run the CEICW again.

5. Since you have single NIC on SBS, I suggest you rerun the CEICW as
following steps:

One network adapter - manual router connection to broadband:
a. On the Connection Type page, click Broadband, and then click Next.
b. On the Broadband Connection page, under My server uses, click A local
router device with an IP address, and then click Next.
c. On the Router Connection page, next to Preferred DNS server and next to
Alternate DNS server, type the IP addresses that are provided by your ISP.
In the Local IP address of router box, type the IP address of the router
that the server uses to connect to the router.
d. Click to select the My server uses a single network connection for both
Internet access and the local network check box, and then click Next.
e. A message may appear that warns that the firewall that is provided
cannot be configured. You are offered a chance to view information about
configuration settings for an existing firewall device.
f. On the Network Connection page, click Server Local Area Connection
under the Connection Name.
g. Click Next.
h. Complete the Configure E-mail and Internet Connection Wizard.

6. This issue may relate to the new network feature of windows server 2003
sp2. I suggest you perform the following steps:

1) Modify the registry to disable Receive Side Scaling
a. Click Start, click Run, type regedit , and then click OK.
b. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:

2) Disable offloading support
a. Click Start, click Run, type regedit , and then click OK.

I attempted to reinstall RWW as requested and ran into a problem. Should
be easy enough one but unfortunately I need some asstance.
When I got to step f, I put cd3 in but the system rejected it because it
was the original version without any SP's. It asked me to point to the
location the SBS SP folder which isnt obviously on the CD and I dont know
where MS keeps the files for system updates. Can you please point me where
the default SP files might be located. Sorry for the rudimentary question
but I am not an IT guy just a small business owner with enough knowledge to
make me dangerous.

Thanks

RE: The connection to the Remote Web Workplace is frequently interrupted or lost.

Hello Homer,

Thank you for your direct answers to make the situation more clearly.

Since this issue also happen on internal RWW access, I think reinstall RWW
will mostly resolve this issue.

For you do not have SBS 2003 sp1 CD, we have workaround for you:

Create a Windows SBS 2003 folder in which Windows SBS 2003 SP1 has been
integrated. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Download Windows SBS 2003 SP1. To obtain this service pack, click the
following link:
http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...1-A184-97D7553
45F59/SBS2003-KB885918-SP1-X86-ENU.EXE

2. Extract the service pack files from the package that you downloaded in
step 1. To do this, follow these steps:

a. On the computer that is running Windows SBS 2003, create a folder that
is named SBS2003-SP1.

b. Open a Command Prompt window, and then change to the directory that
contains the Windows SBS 2003 SP1 package. This file is named
SBS2003-KB885918-SP1-X86-ENU.EXE.

c. Type the following command, and then press ENTER:
SBS2003-KB885918-SP1-X86-ENU.EXE /x
A dialog box appears. You are prompted to select a folder for the extracted
files.

d. Locate and then select the folder that you created in step a. Then,
click OK.

The files are extracted to the SBS2003-SP1 folder.

3. Copy the whole contents of the SBS\CLIENTAPPS\SHAREPT folder from disk
3 of the Disc of Windows SBS 2003 to the following location:
SBS2003-SP1\CD3\ClientApps\sharept

Note: In this path, SBS2003-SP1 represents the folder that you created in
step a.

If you are prompted to insert the Windows SBS 2003 SP1 disc when you next
reinstall Windows SBS 2003 components, specify the SBS2003-SP1 folder on
the Windows SBS 2003-based computer.

Please ensure to run the CEICW after reinstall RWW.

Since you have single NIC on SBS (from the MPS report), I suggest you rerun
the CEICW as following steps:

If we cannot resolve the issue after we perform the steps above, please
help me collect some information for further investigation:

1. Gather IIS log:

a. Open IIS snap-in.

b. Right click Default Web Site and click Properties.

c. Uncheck the "Enable Logging" box and click Apply.

d. Go to C:\WINDOWS\system32\LogFiles\W3SVC1 folder and move all files to a
backup location.

e. Check "Enable Logging" box and click OK.

f. Run IISReset command.

g. Reproduce the problem and send the log file in
C:\WINDOWS\system32\LogFiles\W3SVC1 folder to me for research.

2. Gather IIS Metabase:

1) Download the IIS Resource Kit tools from the following page:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...2EE-A71A-4C73-
B628-ADE629C89499&displaylang=en

2) Install it, run MBExplorer (Metabase Explorer)

3) Right click the "LM" node and choose "Export to file".

4) Specify a file name, specify the password and finish the export.

5) Send the file and the password to v-terliu@microsoft.com

I hope these steps will give you some help.

Thanks and have a nice day!

Best regards,

Terence Liu (MSFT)

Terrence
The RWW install was completed, not without some problems but I was able to
fix them.
Additionally, per your recommendation I ran CEICW after completion of the
reinstall.

I did go ahead and try to log on remotely ... unfortunately the same error
occurred within about 15 minutes of logon.
I have attached the log file as requested.
I will gather the iis metabase and send it to you in another email.
Thanks
Chuck

RE: The connection to the Remote Web Workplace is frequently interrupted or lost.

Hello Homer,

Thank you for your update.

I. Based on my research, the non-standard settings of DefaultAppPool in IIS
cause this issue. I suggest we try the following steps to see if we can
resolve this issue:

1. Please open Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager on SBS

2. Extend ServerName -> Application Pools

3. Right click DefaultAppPool, select properties

4. Please click Recycling tap, ensure only "Recycle worker processes at the
following times" was checked, and the value of 04:00 is specified

Important: Please do not tick other options in this tap.

5. Select Performance tap, ensure "Shutdown worker processes after being
idle for (time in minutes)" was checked and it is set to 600.

6. Click OK.

7. Please run command "IISRESET".

II. Please ensure you select DefaultAppPool in Remote Application pool:

1. Please open Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager on SBS

2. Extend ServerName -> Web Sites -> Default Web Site

3. Right click Remote, select properties

4. Select Virtual Directory tap, in the Application pool box, select
DefaultAppPool, click OK.

5. Please run command "IISRESET".

Then, test this issue.

If we cannot resolve the issue after we perform the steps above, this issue
will become more complex. You may need to call our CSS to ask for further
assistance from senior engineers there.

I hope these steps will give you some help.

Thanks and have a nice day!

Best regards,

Terence
I followed your instructions and then tested with the same results,
unfortunately.
I do want to bring up one point that I came across while following the
steps you outlined below. A couple of screens popped up that you did not
mention after the second restart of iis. A copy of the print screens are
attached in the rtf file. My response to these screens (inheritance
overrides) MAY be influencing the servers current behavior. Meaning, it
may not be working correctly, not because that what you instructed me to do
was not the right solution but rather because of the answers I used when
the two screens popped up. Please note that in both cases I selected none
of the child nodes.

Thanks for your ongoing help.

RE: The connection to the Remote Web Workplace is frequently interrupted or lost.

Hello Homer,

Thank you for your update.

Based on my test, we will not get any inheritance overrides prompt when we
perform the 2 steps. Please ensure you perform the step II correctly: We
need to modify the "Application pool" of "Remote" Virtual Directory. You
can double confirm the steps you performed.

If you still get inheritance overrides prompt after you perform 'IISRESET',
please click "select all", then click OK.

I hope these steps will give you some help.

Thanks and have a nice day!

I reran the procedures as requested and this time experienced no
inheritance overrides. I have attached print screens for your confirmation
that I did accurately set up as requested. Unfortunately, I still have the
problem of not being able to be connected for more than 15 minutes and
being kicked off.

Any other ideas?

Thanks,
Chuck
