Upgrade fails: SQL Server Express 2005 to SQL Server 2005

I’m running SBS 2003 R2 Premium, recently installed SQL Server Express 2005. But later I noticed there were 2 dics provided with SQL Server 2005 that has no limits in the database sizes as the Express version have (4GB MAX). Hence I decided to install the better version. I started the setup but unfortunately it ends with a warning message saying I should run the setup of SQL Server 2005 using command lines with the switch SKUUPGRADE=1.

As it says I inserted the CD which came with R2 Premium Edition and ran the following command in Command prompt:
    start /wait D:\SQL2005\setup.exe SKUUPGRADE=1 /qb

Unfortunately the setup dint prompted me for anything and ended without any confirmation. Am I making any mistake in the up gradation? Please help.

Alrite, the very first thing you need to check is if the database was upgraded. To do the same right click the database under Management Studio and select 'Properties'. Then click on 'View Connection Properties' and check the value next to 'Product Name'. If it is still listed as Express, then the database wasn't upgraded. To do this, the best thing I can suggest you is uninstall SQL Server 2005 Express and install the Workgroup Edition that came with SBS.

I appreciate your help fiend. As you said, I checked the properties, it was listed as Express Edition. Hence I uninstalled SQL Server Express 2005 and tried installing the workgroup edition but it got failed with an error message saying “I already have a version of SQL Server Express installed” How is that possible?

Can you tell me when you removed SQL Server Express were there any instance running in the Services Manager? If yes, then you have to remove them one at a time. If not then simply restart the server and try installing Workgroup edition again. And as far as Starting with the backup is concerned, if you didn't create any databases of your own,
you don't have to backup anything as far as SQL Server 2005 Express goes.
