I recently rebooted the sbs 2003 server after windows update did an auto
update and requested rebooting.

Since then I cannot RDP to the server.. Remotely or from onsite.

oh and yes I've re-run the internet connection wizard..

Any thoughts.

Re: RDP Stopped working after last windows update

Confirm that 'Enable Remote Desktop on this computer' is checked under
'System Properties | Remote'. Then click on 'Select Remote Users' and make
sure that the 'SBS Remote Operators' group is listed there.

RE: RDP Stopped working after last windows update

Hello,

Thank you for your post.
My name is Gary Wang, and it is my pleasure to work with you on this issue!
Please allow me to confirm that my understandings are correct. As I
understand it, the issue is:

The remote desktop connection from client to SBS server cannot established
after applied the last windows update and reboot.

If I have misunderstood your concerns please feel free to let me know.

Suggestion :
==============
I would like to suggest that you try the following steps:

1. This issue may due to you had applied Windows Server 2003 SP2, in this
case, you may like to copy the "termdd.sys" file from the Service Pack 2
cab folder located in "%WINDOWS%\Driver Cache\i386" to the
"%windows%\system32\drivers" as a test.

Also you may like to reinstall Windows Server 2003 SP2 from console(it is
important that you NOT be remote in via RDP).

2. Let's perform a Clean Boot. A Clean Boot will allow us to isolate any
programs that are loading at startup that may be causing a conflict with
other device drivers or programs that are installed in your computer.

1) Run MSCONFIG.EXE. (MSCONFIG is a built-in tool for Windows XP\2003
systems.)
2) In the Services tab, click "Hide All Microsoft Services" and click
"Disable All". Please note that the Exchange services could be marked as
non-Microsoft. Please do not disable those services.
3) In the Startup tab, click "Disable All". Click OK. (This will
temporarily prevent third-party programs from running automatically during
start-up.)
4) Restart the computer. Does the problem still persist?

If the problem does not occur, it indicates that the problem is related to
one application or service we have disabled. You can use the MSCONFIG tool
again to re-enable the disabled item one by one to find out the culprit.

3. Disable any firewall/anti-virus software on SBS server as a test.

Note: please perform a full scan to make sure the system is clean before
perform this.

4. Ensure the RDP is enabled on SBS as Cliff mentioned.

And we may need more information to troubleshooting this issue, please help
me collect some information for further investigation:

Information Need
==============

1. Capture the exact symptom when the error occurs(for example, while
connecting from client failed) and save it to *.JPG files and send to me.
2. Run command "ipconfig /all > c:\ipconfig_sbs.txt" and "route print >
c:\route_sbs.txt" on SBS, send the files c:\ipconfig_sbs.txt and
c:\route_sbs.txt to me
3. Run command "ipconfig /all > c:\ipconfig_client.txt" and "route print >
c:\route_client.txt" on client, send the files c:\ipconfig_client.txt and
c:\route_client.txt to me.
4. Check event viewer for related information, if there are any, please
help save it to *.evt and send to me.
5. Are you using ISA or some third-party firewall?
6. Which is the last update the server had applied? You can check this by
go to Control Pane\Add or Remove Programs, click "Show updates", then
navigate to check the updates under "Windows Server 2003 - Software
Updates".
7. Run the command: netstat -ano > c:\netstat.txt on SBS server, send the
files c:\netstat.txt to me

My email address is v-gzwang@microsoft.com

I look forward to your reply. Also, if you have any questions or concerns,
please do not hesitate to let me know. I am happy to help. :-)

Thank you for your time and cooperation!

Best regards,

Gary Wang(MSFT)

There have been problems with nVidia drivers causing remote desktop not to work. Extremely annoying. Uninstall all nVidia drivers and reinstall an old nVidia driver that works for your card.
