| Network Places shows no computers
Dell had me update the Broadcom NIC driver to fix a problem. Soing so wiped out all previous settings. The dual NIC card were readdressed, CEICW was rerun, communications are back, everyone can get out, emails works, ping works, file sharing and pinting works, DHCP works, everything seems to work ok except that: On server: no computers are shown under the Domain group on the server, not even the server itself. On clients: All clients show up under the domain group, but the server does not show up in the domain listing Clearly some protocol is missing on the server so it is hidden, even to itself. I see that netbios is disableed on the Lan NIC Since I know it will be asked for here is ipconfig/all for the server Windows IP Configuration Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : SAMSON Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . : hostname.lan Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Unknown IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : Yes WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : Yes DNS Suffix Search List. . . . . . : hostname.lan Ethernet adapter Wan: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Broadcom BCM5708C NetXtreme II GigE (NDIS VBD Client) #2 Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-19-B9-B4-18-48 DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.6.19.3 Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 10.6.19.1 DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.16.2 NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . . : Disabled Ethernet adapter Lan: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Broadcom BCM5708C NetXtreme II GigE (NDIS VBD Client) Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-19-B9-B4-18-4A DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.16.2 Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.16.2 Primary WINS Server . . . . . . . : 192.168.16.2 NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . . : Disabled |

| Re: Network Places shows no computers
Thanks for the reply. Sorry for not getting back sooner. Just got back from a business trip. I enabled netbios over TCP/IP and indeed that allowed the client computers to show up. The server was missing still. Then I found the box label "register this connections address in DNS" unchecked. Chwcking that box then allowed the server to be seen in the group as well. It is amazing how easy it is to shoot yourself in the foot! You would not expect that updating the driver for the NIC card would mess thes many things up. I was further complicated by the fact that a new AC was installed in the server room and apparently the worker picked up my server book with all of the notes in it. I am also uncertain why running the CEICW left so many things undone. Usually that will clear up most of the problems. Correct me if I am wrong but when setting up SBS the first time you don't have to go back and do this manually. I had to redo DNS too! Thanks again for your input. | Re: Network Places shows no computers
Right, initially the SBS setup discovers your NIC(s) and sets them up properly. I suspect that the update you applied was a major revision of the driver software and probably confused CEICW (and Windows 2003). Broadcom NICs can sometimes be a pain anyway (at least with Windows 2003 SP1 and SP2). -- Merv Porter [SBS-MVP] ============================ "Joe" <Joe@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:CB68BB14-E6BF-46D5-95C3-C942C3471455@microsoft.com... > Thanks for the reply.
