| Lost Admin Password on XP
I've got an XP client where the local administrator's account password is unknown and the only login they have does not have admin credentials so I can't change anything or even join it to another network to get to a local admin. I remember using some type of program that I booted into that would let me not look up the admin password but change it in the SAM, then restart and I could log in using that new admin credential set. What I don't remember is the program name and I can't find it on my server. What can I do to either find or change the local admin account password? Thanks! -Richard K |

If it's a member of the domain, then domain administrators have administrative privileges on the machine, and can simply reset the local administrator password. |

The problem is this computer is a member of a domain that does not exist (nor does the domain controller) anymore. That's why I need to get to the local admin account |

If Its a non-domain WS this might apply. Im not sure if it does, I havent tested It myself. I think I copied It from Leythos. ***************** Download and burn the Linux rescue cd from: Boot the WS from the cd and at the first screen that says boot: type ntpass and press enter accept all defaults and follow the instructions. set the password to blank. reboot by typing reboot, and pull the cd out when the WS start rebooting. ***************** This might also be an alternative. Changes the Local Admin password to blank. Note that questions like this are best posted in microsoft.public.windowsxp.general, as it isn't an SBS question at all. That said, see you'll create a boot CD which will let you reset (blank out) the local admin account. |

1. Login to a computer that can link to Internet. Download Windows Password Unlocker 4.0 and decompress it on that PC. Note that: there is a .ISO file. Burn the .ISO file to a CD. 2 Get out the newly created CD and insert it to the locked computer. 3 re-booted the locked computer and then followed the process of instructions. Just a few steps, the old password was removed.'' '4 Setting new password: Step one: Open the "Control Panel" Step two: Click the "User Account " Step three: Select the account you wanna to set a new password. Step four: Click "changing Account " and "set up password", then fill out the form as listed. Click "Create Password". |

When you reply to a post in http://forums.techarena.in it shows up as a broken thread on a Microsoft Public newsgroup Specifically NewsServer: msnews.microsoft.com newsgroup: microsoft.public.windows.server.sbs This site. http://forums.techarena.in/small-business-server/ Copies Posts from Microsoft Break/Fix SBS newsgroup. So Any responding or posting means that 99% of the world will not know what you are responding to. (Since it will be a broken thread on the original source.) In your current post we have no reference to what you are talking about. If you avoid Techarena.in and post directly to the Microsoft newsgroup you will benefit from threads not getting broken. And a lot of misunderstanding. You can either use a NNTP News Reader (Example Outlook Express) And set it up with: NewsServer: msnews.microsoft.com newsgroup: microsoft.public.windows.server.sbs or By Clicking Below news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsof...ows.server.sbs If you wish a "WEB" Based interface with NO Ad's you can go directly to this forum with. http://www.microsoft.com/communities...&lang=en&cr=US It has the feature to notify you on a reply also. To Search for issues in the past the best way is to Google them. This has way more information than that website will ever have and help you to stay connected. |
