    Transfer SBS 2003 License

I am having a very old desktop running with SBS 2003 R2 Standard. The hardware is very very old and I guess it is the reason why my server is hanging during boot up and creating many other problems with the server such as not able to handle the server services. So I am planning to transfer the same on new hardware. Here my concern is how can I transfer the SBS license from this hardware to new hardware?

    Thanks in advance.

If it is not the OEM one then the process is very simple. You just need to install the server on new PC. When all ready, before activating the new one, make sure to delete/format the older one and then activate the new installation. Once done, call up Microsoft via phone and tell them about the situation to activate the new server. The CAL license transfer is through the wizard. I repeat again, this can only be done with retail or volume license only, not with OEM.

I appreciate your prompt response friend. In my case where it is the retail version of SBS 2003 R2 Standard, where is this CAL License Transfer Wizard?

    Thanks again.

Well it is right on the licensing node of your Server Management console. Also remember that after making significant changes to server hardware you will need to transfer client access licenses (CALs) from one server to another using Transfer License Wizard. During this problem you will given a phone number to call up in order to complete the transfer of CALs.

    Server 2003

    Hello.
I'm still new when it comes to servers, but carrying from this tread, I have a Server 2003 SBS. This has 10 cals.
I'm going to get a Server R2 2003 SBS (new box and oem license).
Can I legally and easily transfer the 5 cals form the old SBS server to the new server then decommission the old server?

    Thank you.
