RWW/OWA Unresponsive

Hello,

At least once or twice per week, my Remote Web Workplace & Oulook Web Access
site becomes unresponsive. When I try to open the page using Internet
Explorer I received the typical "Internet Explorer cannot display the
webpage". The only way I have been able to get the service(s) running again
is to restart my SBS 2003 server. When I view the logs in the Event Viewer,
there are absolutley no indications of a problem. Has anyone ever seen
anything like this and/or have a resolution?

Thank you.

On the server itself, when this is happening, if you open IIS manager &
browse the sites manually, what do you get?

What if you run an iisreset?

Next time the it goes down I will take a look at these and report back.
Unfortunatelly, it is unpredictable.

Thanks.

Re: RWW/OWA Unresponsive

Well, it has finally gone down. I tried manually browsing the sites but they
all display "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage". Also, IISRESET
does not correct the problem. It appears that the only think left to do is
to restart the server.

Any other ideas?

Thanks.

Check your Windows services (all those pertaining to IIS).....see whether
restarting those helps.

Re: RWW/OWA Unresponsive

Hello Matthew,

Thank you for posting here. Let's also thank Lanench for the input.

According to your description, I understand that you unable to access RWW
and OWA and get error "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage".
Reboot the
SBS to get it temporary relief. If I have misunderstood the problem, please
don't hesitate to let me know.

Based on my research, I suggest we try the following steps to see if we can
resolve this issue:

1. Please rerun the CEICW on SBS to ensure the IIS configuration is
properly:

Go through the follow KB and rerun CEICW carefully.

How to configure Internet access in Windows Small Business Server 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/825763/en-us

Detailed steps for your reference:

a. On the SBS 2003 Server open the Server Management console. Go to
Standard Management\To Do List.

b. Click the "Connect to the Internet" link.

c. When navigating to the Firewall page, select "Enable firewall" and click
Next.

d. On the "Services Configuration" page, select all the items and then
click Next.

e. On the "Web Services Configuration" page, make sure "Allow access to the
entire Web site from the Internet" is selected. If you select "Allow access
to only the following Web site services from the Internet", make sure all
items in the list are selected. Click Next.

f. On the "Web Server Certificate" page, choose to create a new Web server
certificate and then type the public domain name (your public DNS name)
that you will use to access OWA and RWW (for example, if your public domain
name that you use to access the sites is www.xyz.com, you should type
www.xyz.com as the new certificate name).

g. Go through the remaining steps.

2. Do you install Windows Server 2003 sp2 on SBS? If yes, please perform
the following steps:

1) Update the network adapter drivers
Contact the network adapter manufacturer or contact the original equipment
manager (OEM) for the computer to determine whether an updated network
adapter driver is available. You must have drivers that are compatible with
NDIS 5.2 or with a later version.
2) Modify the registry to disable Receive Side Scaling
a. Click Start, click Run, type regedit , and then click OK.
b. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters
c. If the EnableRSS registry entry does not exist, create it. To do this,
follow these steps:
a) On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
b) In the New Value #1 box, type EnableRSS , and then press ENTER.

d. Right-click EnableRSS, and then click Modify.
e. In the Value data box, type 0 (zero), and then click OK.
f. Exit Registry Editor.

3) Disable offloading support
a. Click Start, click Run, type regedit , and then click OK.
b. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters
c. In the details pane, right-click EnableTCPA, and then click Modify.

Note: If the EnableTCPA registry entry does not exist, create it. To do
this, follow these steps:
a) On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
b) In the New Value #1 box, type EnableTCPA , and then press ENTER.

d. In the Value data box, type 0 (zero), and then click OK.
e. Exit Registry Editor.
f. Restart the computer.

3. Some antivirus software will cause this issue. Do you install any
antivirus software on SBS? If yes, please uninstall it and test this issue.
The clean boot on SBS will help us further isolate this issue:

To clean boot the problematic computer, please use the steps below:
a. Click Start, click Run, and then in the Open box, type "MSCONFIG"
(without the quotation marks). Click OK.

b. In the System Configuration Utility (MSConfig) window, click to select
the Selective Startup button.

c. Click to clear the check mark from the "Load startup items" below
Selective Startup.

d. Click the Services tab, click to check the "Hide All Microsoft Services"
box, and remove all the check marks from the remained Non-Microsoft
Services. Please note that the Exchange services could be marked as
non-Microsoft. Please do not disable those services.

e. Click OK to close the MSConfig window. Click Yes when you are asked to
restart your computer in order to enable the changes.

f. After restarting, please check whether this issue will reoccur.

g. If there are no more problems, please use the above steps to enable
services and startup items one by one in order to figure out the root cause
of this issue.

4. The NPP leak will also cause this issue. Some outdated third-party
kernel driver is usually cause the NPP leak. High recommendations for
updating all Symantec and Legato drivers at your SBS. This will probably be
enough to solve the NPP leak.

5. Please try to perform the steps in the following KB to see if it help:

Error message when you try to view a Web page that is hosted on IIS 6.0:
"Page cannot be displayed"
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;933844

If we cannot resolve the issue after we perform the above steps, please
help me collect some information for further investigation:

1. Can you access companyweb or OMA or any web sites on this SBS when the
issue happen?

2. Please capture screenshots on the error page and send the pictures to me
at v-terliu@microsoft.com

3. Gather MPS network report on SBS:

a. Download MPSrepot_network from
http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...5-a579-30b0bd9
15706/MPSRPT_NETWORK.EXE

b. Run MPSRPT_NETWORK.exe.

c. The tool will automatically collect the information. This procedure will
take 10~15 minutes.

d. Open Windows Explorer, navigate to the folder:
%SystemRoot%\MPSReports\Network\Reports\Cab\

e. Send the .cab file directly to me at v-terliu@microsoft.com

I hope these steps will give you some help.

Thanks and have a nice day!

Best regards,

Terence Liu(MSFT)

Terence-

Thank four your help with this issue. Unfortunately, I have been
unsuccessful in finding a solution so far. Attached you will find the MPS
Network Report you requested. To answer your other question, I cannot
access any other internal websites when this issue occurs. Since working
through your procedure this morning, I'm not able to get the service
running at all, even after a restart. I think something went wrong during
KB 825763, but I'm not sure.

If there is any additional information I can provide you, please don't
hesitate to ask. Would you remoting into our server be an option? I'm
open to that if you are.

Thank you!!!

Re: RWW/OWA Unresponsive

Hello Matthew,

Thank you for your email.

First, the KB 825763 is OK for you. You can refer the following steps to
run CEICW:

One network adapter - manual router connection to broadband
a. On the Connection Type page, click Broadband, and then click Next.
b. On the Broadband Connection page, under My server uses, click A local
router device with an IP address, and then click Next.
c. On the Router Connection page, next to Preferred DNS server and next to
Alternate DNS server, type the IP addresses that are provided by your ISP.
In the Local IP address of router box, type the IP address of the router
that the server uses to connect to the router.
d. Click to select the My server uses a single network connection for both
Internet access and the local network check box, and then click Next.
e. A message may appear that warns that the firewall that is provided
cannot be configured. You are offered a chance to view information about
configuration settings for an existing firewall device.
f. On the Network Connection page, click Server Local Area Connection
under the Connection Name.
g. Click Next.
h. Complete the Configure E-mail and Internet Connection Wizard.

Another, as newsgroup engineer, we unable to RDP to customer server and do
any change. It is not allowed. If you would like this kind of support, you
can call our CSS for telephone support.
To obtain the phone numbers for specific technology request please take a
look at the web site listed below.

http://support.microsoft.com/default...S;PHONENUMBERS

If you are outside the US please see http://support.microsoft.com for
regional support phone numbers.

Back to this issue, from the MPS report, I find many w3svc event error 1007
and 1113 in system event log:

=======================
Event Type: Error
Event Source: W3SVC
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1007
Date: 2/26/2008
Time: 2:37:12 AM
User: N/A
Computer: KEPHARTSBS01
Description:
Cannot register the URL prefix 'https://*:444/' for site '947283874'. The
necessary network binding may already be in use. The site has been
deactivated. The data field contains the error number.

Event Type: Error
Event Source: W3SVC
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1113
Date: 2/26/2008
Time: 2:37:12 AM
User: N/A
Computer: KEPHARTSBS01
Description:
One of the IP/Port combinations for site '947283874' has already be
configured to be used by another site. The other site's SSL configuration
will be used.
=======================

Typically, this issue occurs when one or more of the following conditions
are true:

1. Another process is using port 80 or port 443 on the computer that is
running IIS. By default, IIS uses port 80 as the default TCP port and port
443 for Secure Sockets Layer (SSL).

2. The ListenOnlyList registry subkey is not configured correctly on the
computer that is running IIS.

Please follow the RESOLUTION section in the following KB to find the
culprit process:

You receive a "The process cannot access the file because it is being used
by another process" error message when you try to start a Web site in the
Internet Information Services MMC snap-in
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=890015

I hope these steps will give you some help.

Thanks and have a nice day!

Best regards,

Terence Liu(MSFT)
