SBS 2008 upgrade

Does anyone know if SBS 2008 will be capable of an in place upgrade
from SBS 2003 R2?

I have an opportunity that can use SBS 2003 R2 now, and I want to know
before I pitch it.

Obviously I would sell Software Assurance... but if the in place
upgrade to 2008 is not possible, I may advise him to hold off until
the release. I could do a swing... but I'd rather rock the boat just
once to meet his minimal budget and keep disruption minimized.

Re: SBS 2008 upgrade

Since the next version of SBS will have Exchange 2007 and it requires 64bit
OS, then you can summize that there will be no direct inplace upgrade path
available. Similar to Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2007 migration path you
must take now, no inplace upgrades are supported.

Re: SBS 2008 upgrade

That is unfortunate, as I am in the same boat. Do I sell SBS 2003 now, or
wait for SBS 2008? Slight dilemma!

I would sell SBS 2k3 with SA on hardware supporting 64 Bit and Migrate on
release.

Re: SBS 2008 upgrade

The problem is not the physical aspect, it is getting them to understand
that they need to upgrade just few months after selling a new
server...along with the cost of labor to do so.

I have enough trouble just getting most clients to understand the benefits
of SBS vs. their peer-to-peer or old NT4/2000 server.

They won't "need" to upgrade, as SBS2003 will be supported for quite a long
time after the new version RTM.

But they will have the "opportunity" to upgrade as soon as they are ready.
Heck they can even budget for a little extra memory and some consulting time
to implement it. Much more attractive than wallowing in another 6 months of
NT4 or P2P.

Re: SBS 2008 upgrade

As has been stated publicly for some time, the next version of SBS will ONLY
be available in 64-bit. (This is driven by many factors, but certainly the
requirement that Exchange 2007 only runs on 64-bit is a strong contributor.)

There is NO in place upgrade from any 32-bit Microsoft operating system to
any 64-bit Microsoft operating system. Period. Full stop.

Therefore, it is safe to assume that there will be no in place upgrade to
SBS_Next.

Re: SBS 2008 upgrade

OK. Understood. So there are some unanswered questions then...

1) Will a swing migration still be possible?
2) Will the process be much different?
3) Assuming we'd use the same hardware (64bit) as purchasing now, we'd
have to include additional time/software to backup/image the SBS 2003
R2 to a virtual server for a worst case scenario if the swing were to
go awry. Would you agree?
4) Has anyone thought about what this entire process would require in
time and money? Please share some basics.

When you add all of this up, does purchasing SBS now make sense? I
tend to lean towards waiting 9 months.

Re: SBS 2008 upgrade

John,

Most of this discussion is NDA for those of us currently running Cougar
Beta, including myself, so you won't get much from any MVP or Micrsoft
Support other than whats publicly available now. Testing is still going on
with the next version, so by stating something here that would not be in the
final product release would not be wise or help anyone at this point. I
would have to suggest purchase SBS 2003 R2 with SA on 64 bit hardware, this
way you are covered when they do decide to upgrade. That is all you can
honestly do at this point.

Re: SBS 2008 upgrade

How big a shop?

I'd possibly be looking at getting the new box with an x64 OS and running
SBS in Virtual Server. The eventual aim being to run Windows 2008 Server
Core + Hyper-V, with SBS2008 under Hyper-V.

Fits your timing, implement SBS2003 now with everything in place for your
eventual migration.

There are however _major_ considerations about performance/demand, I can't
tell you how SBS2008 will behave in production, serving what number of
users, virtualised.

I expect the principles of www.sbsmigration.com to be applicable to
SBS2003 - SBS2008, the process relies on standard AD communication/processes
to copy the AD, isolate it, tidy it up, bring in the new SBS.

MS suggest they will have their own migration strategy. It is important to
MS to get such right because it is going to effect anyone moving from
current to new product (inplace upgrade not even being an option).
