| Internet Access Slow - Ghost NIC found
Situation: Important Point 1 - Restored a backup of SBS after complete array failed. Backup that worked was 3 days before the fail, the one the night before was corrupted. Important Point 2 - About 2 months or so before this the motherboard on this unit died and was replaced. New motherboard was same chipset and such but didn't have the onboard NIC as per the original. A second network adapter was installed through PCI to compensate. Problem: Since the restore users on the internet have been getting slow access to the server and many times "error pages" such as "no results found for.." when entering the address for OWA or RWW. Upon refreshing the page it works. I tested myself remotely and had no web based problems however found that IMAP consistantly was losing connection and couldn't seem to sustain a connection to the exchange box. I checked in with my service provider and they haven't been able to find any problem on their end, so I looked deeper on my box and noticed something strange. The original onboard NIC Adapter is back in my Device Manager. I've now got in there: ASUSTeK/Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller - Packet Scheduler Miniport Intel 8255x-based PCI Ethernet Adapter (10/100) #2 Intel(R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection I've disabled it and tried to uninstall it and it won't go away! It comes up with an error: "Failed to uninstall the device. The device may be required to boot up the computer." I can't find it bound to anything and it doesn't show up in my Network Connections or such, could it be causing this network connection problem? Why can it not uninstall? Yes - I have run the "Connect to the internet" wizard multiple times now. Any other plans or ideas anyone can give me for this? Cheers, Keven. |

Well heck, that makes everything even more exciting! I have 8 folders under Interfaces, 5 (including NdisWanIp) under Adapters. When I scroll through the Interfaces, I have an interesting thing show up.. First - IP = 0.0.0.0 Second - IP = 10.206.0.2 Third - IP = 0.0.0.0 Fourth - IP = 0.0.0.0 (bit it has a lot of other information including name server of 10.0.0.6, and DhcpServer of 10.206.0.1 so it contains data about both internal and external networks) Fifth - IP = 10.0.0.6 Sixth - IP = 0.0.0.0 Seventh - IP = 0.0.0.0 Eighth - IP = 10.0.0.6 For this server, 10.0.0.6 is the server's LAN addy, and 10.206.0.1 is it's WAN addy. Now all these folders specify nothing about the driver for the software, they all have folder names that are GUIDs. How does one convert this to .. something legible? Heck, even more important, when I tried to uninstall the driver from device manager it came up saying that it could cause the server not to load.. how realistic is that if I force it out from the registry? Cheers, Keven. Keven First it's not as bad as it sounds.. I have to add the disclaimer about using the registry, do so at your own risk. This what I would do, but may be someone else here has a better idea. After hours, with no users on line, make a backup of the system state to the local disk, and if you have a floppy, create an ASR diskette for the C drive. Aslo, make sure you have a CD or diskette or what ever media possible with the NIC drivers in hand. Look at HKLM>Software>Microsft>Windows>CurrentVersion>Run, and see if any NIC drivers or software helper are loaded. If you find anything, remove it and reboot. No luck, next step. Search the entire registry for entries with a your old NIC name. Delete what you find and reboot. No luck: Remove all the interfaces with 0.0.0.0, leave only the one with the entries known to be a valid card. If you are not sure about any of them, you can remove all of them. If that is the case, Remove all the network cards from your device manager and reboot in safe mode without networking (F8 when prompted). At this point you should see nothing in the Network cards entry and device manager. You should be able to add the "REAL NIC" Drivers and reboot normally. The point is, this is trial, error and learn. I do not see how you can lock yourself out of the server, since there is always a way to recover, like last know good menu and Directory services recovery mode, where you can restore the system state to the back you did in the beginning. HTH -- :-) |

So, did you have success, or are you still stuck in the water?
