Hi Anthony, Thanks for your posting and thank Marina for the answer. Marina is quite right, you can solve this problem by install the following hotfix: A Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) update package is available for Windows Server 2003 http://support.microsoft.com/?id=833167 For more information about the SBS Backup Wizard for backing up/restoring on the SBS server Backup and Restore Whitepaper: http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...a-8eb7-26300d6 2bcc9/BKU_BkupRstr.doc Backup Operation Fails When You Back Up Exchange Server 2003 Databases and System State Information at the Same Time http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;820272 If there is anything else that I can do for you, please feel free to contact me, and I will be happy to help! | Re: Backup Question
Hi, I have exactly the same problem, but I use Veritas Backup Exec 9.1, and it is completely upto date. Veritas pointed us to a Windows VSS problem and asked us to contact Microsoft to obtain a hotfix for the problem. I have checked out the Article and hotfix recommended, but I have Windows SBS 2003 Premium and I rang Microsoft to obtain this hotfix and they won't give it to me because the article does not say that it is compatible with this version. Do you know of any other hotfix that would be applicable to SBS 2003 premium that would help us get our backups running properly? I have searched everywhere and can't find this. In the mean time all our backups fail because of the Shadow Copy Components. Hi Marina, I got the fix from Microsoft but unfortunately has not solved the problem. Every backup fails and gives the same error message. I don't know what to do anymore, do you know of any other fix that is out there? I have searched and found nothing. Veritas point the finger at Microsoft. Thanks. Mon. Hi Mon, Thanks for using SBS newsgroup. Generally, we answer one question per post in the newsgroups. Since the resolution provided in the previous post has not helped you, it must be a different issue. In order to concentrate fully on the new issue we ask that you post it as a separate thread. That way each issue can receive full attention and will also make the thread more clear and consistent for others reference. Hi Mon, If you had to call MS to get this hotfix, and it isn't doing what it is supposed to do, you should be able to call back and ask about it. I have lost the history of the thread, so I can't remember which exact error message you had. What hardware are you using? | Re: Backup Question
Hi Marina, Thanks for the replies. The problem I'm having is that Veritas backup exec 9.1 (completely upto date with updates) is failing the backups because of VSS. The summary I get on the email first is: "A failure occurred querying the Write r status", within the actual veritas report, the message is: "Backup - Shadow?Copy?Components Shadow?Copy?Components - A failure occurred querying the Writer status". ( I actually have the report from veritas for every backup, I get them e-mailed to me automatically). I contacted Microsoft and got the fix, installed it and still am getting the same message errors. SQL is running on the server, but I did not install it or maintain it, another company does that (it's used for a document imaging system used on the premises). SQL has always been there, it's only lately that this problem has started to ocurr (I mean Veritas used to fail on and off, but never 3 weeks in a row failed on VSS). Thanks again. Mon. | Re: Backup Question
Last night I restarted the server after updating both windows and veritas latest patches. And still got the same message this morning. Here is a thought. What if I were to backup without the VSS components?, as in Veritas there is an option to include these or not in the backup. The worry is if I had to do a restore from the tape, would this affect the restore, i.e. would I have problems then with Windows Server if I didn't restore the VSS after a complete crash? | Re: Backup Question
Hi Mon, Thank you for using SBS newsgroup. From the description, I understand that you also have issue with the VSS when you perform the backup using veritas EXEC. First of all, please install the following hotfix to see if there is any help. How to turn on the Exchange writer for the Volume Shadow Copy service in Windows Small Business Server 2003 - http://support.microsoft.com/?id=838183'. If the issue still persists, I would suggest that you open a new post for this issue since this issue may be different and tough. In the new post, our support engineers can concentrate fully on your issue. If you still want to continue this thread, please help me collect the following information to isolate the issue: 1. You have mentioned that the issue is caused by VSS, so what is the error message or event log about the VSS error? 2. Check in the service console, make sure that the startup type of "Volume shadow copy" service is manual. For your information: How to troubleshoot the error "A failure occurred querying the Writer status" (a000fed1 HEX or e000fed1 HEX) using VSSADMIN http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/261993.htm NOTE: This response contains a reference to a third party World Wide Web site. | Re: Backup Question
Hi Mon, First of all I would just use the SBS Backup wizard. Veritas has got its own patches too. I don't know if Veritas is able to backup without the VSS options. -- Regards, Marina Roos Microsoft SBS-MVP One of the Magical M&M's www.smallbizserver.net Take part in SBS forum: http://www.smallbizserver.net/Default.aspx?tabid=53 "Mon" <Mon@discussions.microsoft.com> schreef in bericht news:7724191E-71C6-4CEF-9074-322DDE462F44@microsoft.com... > Last night I restarted the server after updating both windows and veritas > latest patches.
