Unable to send email using Smart Host, able to receive via POP3 Connector

I have got a new HP ProLiant ML110 and have setup Windows SBS Server 2003 for a client. They want to use their existing POP3 accounts on this server via MS Exchange. I have configured the POP3 connector and have set up the Smart Host. They are able to receive it but cannot send it. I have also tried using their ISPs mail server IP address without any success, ensuring that the ip address is in the brackets. I have configured the external DNS server IP addresses through the default virtual server properties. They do not have a static IP address and definately do not want to setup a new domain for sending and receiving email via the MS Exchange server. They only want to use thier POP3 account. Below is the message that is returned when trying to send an email via Outlook on one of the workstations:

Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.

    Subject: TEST EMAIL 555
    Sent: 16/08/2007 12:00 AM

The following recipient(s) could not be reached:

    <email>@theitguys.com.au on 16/08/2007 12:00 AM
There was a SMTP communication problem with the recipient's email server. Please contact your system administrator.
    <SERVER.<their company name>.local #5.5.0 smtp;553 <their company name>.local does not exist>

Any ideas how to solve this issue? Thanks.

Re: Unable to send email using Smart Host, able to receive via POP3Connector

Exchange seems to be claiming to be <SERVER>.<their company name>.local, which is not a legal internet name. So, in the Recipient Policies, the real domain name should be set to be primary. As you have seen, the From and Reply-to addresses of your users are derived from this primary domain and very few mail servers will accept mail claiming to come from a local sender. It might be possibe that there could be other issues, but this is the first to be fixed.

There is an article that describes how to set up Windows Small Business Server 2003 for Internet access. Just follow the link below for the methods given on that website:
