| RE: Volume Shadow Copy Service error - hr = 0x80070005
Hi Tomas, Thanks for posting in our newsgroup. From your description, I know that you get Event ID 8194 both day and night 2-3 times. If I am off-base, please don't hesitate to let me know. Please let me know the following to make the situation more clearly: 1. Do you use the SBS backup or third party backup software? Based on my research, Backups using some third party backup software may complete successfully, but log a VSS event 8194 in the application log. Please take the following steps to see if the problem can be resolved: Step 1: Please try to have a clean boot. A Clean Boot will allow us to isolate any device drivers or programs that are loading at startup that may be causing a conflict with other device drivers or programs that are installed in your computer. To do this: 1. Click Start->Run...->type msconfig and press Enter. 2. Click Services tab and select Hide All Microsoft Services and Disable All third party Services. 3. Click Startup tab and Disable All startup items. 4. Click OK and choose Restart. 5. After reboot, check whether the problem still occurs. 6. If there are no more problems, please use the above steps to enable services and startup items one by one in order to figure out the root cause of this issue. Step 2: Therefore, please temporarily uninstall all the anti-virus tools and then reboot your system. Please perform backup tests to see if the problem disappears. For more information, please refer to: 888035 Quarantined virus files are skipped and your backup reports a failed status on your Windows Small Business Server 2003-based computer http://support.microsoft.com/?id=888035 Step 3: Please try to launch the built-in ntbackup utility (ntbackup) and backup small files to the hard disk for a test. Can the backup process finish successfully? Step 5: The problem may be caused the VSS, please install the following hoxfixes: For SBS 2003 SP0: A Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) update package is available for ... http://support.microsoft.com/?id=833167 A Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) update-2 package is available http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;887827 For SBS 2003 SP1: Update is available that fixes various Volume Shadow Copy Service issues in Windows Server 2003 http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;891957 913648 A new Volume Shadow Copy Service update is now available that fixes various Volume Shadow Copy Service problems in Windows Server 2003 http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;913648 If the problem still exists, please try to collect the following for further research: 1. The backup log files in the "C:\Documents and Settings\SBS Backup User\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows NT\NTBackup\data" folder. 3. MPS Report 1) Download MPS report tool from: http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...5-a579-30b0bd9 15706/MPSRPT_SETUPPerf.EXE 2) Run the MPSRPT_SETUPPerf.exe on the server box. 3) Wait for 10~15 minutes. 4) Open Windows explorer, navigate to %SYSTEMROOT%\MPSReports\Setup\Reports\cab\ 5) Send the .cab file to me.
