Best upgrade path - SBS2003 to SP2

Picked up a new client with SBS2003 -- 8 client network.

As I look through the server, it appears that SBS2003 SP1 and SP2 have NOT
been installed -- just the critical updates. WSUS is not installed either,
and clients go to Microsoft for any updates.

Any guidance on the best way to get this SBS2003 install up to SP2?

1. I assume that you have to install SP1 before installing SP2 - that SP2 is
not a full roll-up.

2. Does the SBS2003 Service packs also include the Service Pack updates for
the sub-modules, such as Exchange Server, or does that need to be updated on
its own?

3. Pitfalls in doing what is essentially a "double-upgrade" at one time?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Best upgrade path - SBS2003 to SP2

there is no SBS2003 SP2. There is not yet a release version of Windows
Server SP2.

SBS 2003 SP1 includes Exchange Server SP1, ExchSP2 has since been released.
You can go direct from no SP to Exchange SP2.

Microsoft Service Packs are normally cumulative, the latest SP includes all
previous versions. The only exception I remember to this is SQL, at least
one of the SQL SP's could not be installed till a previous SP was done.
(There may be other MS products which have similar, I just haven't come
across them)

Take Exch to SP2 then do SBS 2003 SP1 which will recognise Exchange is on a
later SP and not worry about it. Then install WSUS.

If it's Premium not all parts of SP1 are available for download, you must
order the CD from MS and right at the moment that's not possible either.
Download and apply what is available.

We have one client that was setup incorrectly by the first IT company (and
fired) and we've not been able to have enough down-time to wipe/reinstall
so that we can apply SP1 or Sp2 - thank god we have a dedicated Exchange
server that is fully patched.

As that client has exceeded the license level of SBS we bought the SWING
Migration kit and are moving them to a new Server 2003 Standard box with
SQL CPU licenses and 4GB RAM and 12 Drives - to support 160 active clients
using a SQL intensive app.

We will not be applying SP1 or SP2 to the old SBS 2003 Prem box, I'm
actually afraid to do it since it was not setup using the wizards and the
computers were not properly joined - it's been a fight just keeping it
working for this last year.

If you're going to do it, I would suggest that you have a FULL server
backup using some form of Disk Image software that allows you to restore
the FULL IMAGE in case it fails.

Gumby is correct in his statements

If you have IMF already Installed Before Exchange SP2 you need to Uninstall
it first

If you want to know about time
SP1 takes about 3hrs if everything goes well and 5hrs if you have issues.
(At least that's been the time for me.)

Thanks -- and yes, I was planning on a full-image backup.

Re: Best upgrade path - SBS2003 to SP2

Thanks to both of you. Great info. Sorry about the confusion over SP
numbers -had been comparing SBS SP1 and Exchange SP1 & 2 --too tired to be
sending stuff out....

Think I will do a run through in the lab since there are several different
items to be updated.

Wrong.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/t...aspx?familyId=
95ac1610-c232-4644-b828-c55eec605d55&displayLang=en

It is already recommended for SBS2003 including first release
and R2.

Of course there are those amongst us who never received the
ordered upgrade to SBS2003 Premium, and I don't know where that
leads us.

For those of us with Premium, Microsoft needs to tell us what
to do, or make available ISA2004 on Line.

Re: Best upgrade path - SBS2003 to SP2

why go back a couple of days? Why not tell me something I said 5yrs ago is
no longer correct?

It wasn't just people who installed W2K3 SP1 to SBS2003 on 'day 0' that got
bitten, but SURE, GO AHEAD. Me, I'm throwing together a test system as I
type.

It it getting confusing, isn't it?

However, note that Windows 2003 SP1 is not the same thing as SBS2003 SP1

Likewise, Windows 2003 SP2 is NOT a SBS specific service pack like the
reference made to SBS2003 SP2.

So, there STILL is no SBS2003 SP2. Perhaps there will be sometime in the
future.

But, I can understand your frustration about difficulty in getting the
ISA2004 upgrade. Have you contacted your local Microsoft Sales office?

I've tried to order on line twice and have been notified by
mail that it is not available.

When I first installed SBS2003 Premium 2 years ago I registered
with MicroSoft and dutifully downloaded all the Windows
Updates, I had no idea until 3 months ago that Microsoft had
released a SP1 specifically for Premium. . I discoved it on
this forum when I came to download WSUS for my SBS. Saying SP1
is not available is like saying SP1 for XP is not available. In
fact is worse, as there is as yet no SBS 2007, and so all
versions of SBS 2003 should still be supported.

If anyone has the SBS2003 SP1 Premium I could use a copy.
