"Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 setup did not complete successfully" on SBS 2003

When installing the newest sharepoint on our SBS server, using the
official SBS-Sharepoint doc form MS, I get: "Microsoft Windows
SharePoint Services 3.0 setup did not complete successfully"

After that, if I try to go to configuration anyway, I get the
following:

"failed to start the database service MSSQL$MICROSOFT##SSEE. Repair
this product"

After I do a repair, I go back into the sharepoint configuration it
still does not work and says it can't conect to a database (Don't have
the exact error at this moment).

What can I do to successfully do a side by side installation? I was
using the doc found here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Thank You

Joseph

RE: "Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 setup did not complete successfully" on SBS 2003

Hello Joseph,

Thank you for posting here.

According to your description, I understand that your WSS 3.0 setup did not
complete successfully and you can not configure the WSS. If I have
misunderstood the problem, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Based on my research, I think the installation did not complete
successfully refer to previous version of ASP.NET3.0 was not uninstalled
properly. I suggest we try the following steps to see if we can resolve
this issue:

Step 1: uninstall WSS 3.0

To delete the Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 default Web site
1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and
then click SharePoint 3.0 Central Administration.

2. On the Application Management tab, in SharePoint Web Application
Management, click Delete Web Application.

3. On the Delete Web Application page, complete the following:

a. In Web Application, from the drop-down menu, click Change Web
Application. On the Select Web Application page, select the Windows
SharePoint Services 3.0 default Web site (http://ServerName).

Note: Make sure that you delete the default Web site (http://ServerName)
and not the site that you just created in the preceding step.

b. In Delete options, delete the content databases and the IIS Web sites.

c. Click Delete.

d. In the warning message box, click Yes.

4. Wait for the Application Management tab to appear, and then close the
Windows SharePoint Services Central Administration site.

Step 2: reinstall .net 3.0

1. Download the following tool at link below
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...C63-D405-4E13-
909F-E85AA9E66146&displaylang=en

2. Run the tool to uninstall previous version .net 3.0

3. Please download .net 3.0 from the following link
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=77799

4. Then re-install .net 3.0

Step 3: reinstall WSS 3.0

Please go through the following document and perform the WSS 3.0
installation steps (step 2 to step 4)

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...c81-efff-4f5b-

If the issue persists, please kindly help me collect some information for
further investigation:

1. Please capture screenshot on the error message and send the picture to
me at v-terliu@microsoft.com

2. Download the Setup Edition of MPS_Report tool from
http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...5-a579-30b0bd9
15706/MPSRPT_SETUPPerf.EXE, run it on the SBS Server. Email me the
%COMPUTERNAME%_MPSReports_.CAB file which is under the
%systemroot%\MPSReports\Setup\Lite\Cab directory.

3. Provide me with the WSS installation log based on the following steps:
a. Click Start, and then click Run.
b. Type "%temp%" (without quotation marks), and then click OK.
c. In the %temp% folder, look for a file or files with the name Microsoft
Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 Setup(000n)_Task(0001).txt.

4. Compress and email me with the C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Integration\Windows Small Business Server 2003\Logs folder.

Hope these steps will give you some help.

Thanks and have a nice day!

Best regards,

Terence Liu(MSFT)

I had already went to Add/Remove Programs and removed WSS 3.0 after it
failed... will that make a large difference with the instructions you
provided?

Thank you for the help

Re: "Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 setup did not complete successfully" on SBS 2003

Hello Joseph,

Thank you for kind update.

There is not large difference between step 1. Please start from step 2 now.

Note: the side by side WSS 3.0 installation document you find is great,
please go through the document more carefully. After reinstall the .net
3.0, please perform the steps in the doucment one by one.

Please do not hesitate to let me know if this problem reoccurs or if
there's anything else I can do for you.

Thank you and have a nice day,

Best regards,

Terence Liu(MSFT)

Re: "Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 setup did not complete successfully" on SBS 2003

Hello Joseph,

Thank you for your email.

Based on my research, I find error in your Microsoft Windows SharePoint
Services 3.0 Setup.log:

Executing command path: 'C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft
Shared\SERVER12\Server Setup Controller\wrapinst.exe', args: 'timeout=2950
MsiPath=database\SSEE_10.msi'
Error: Command: 'C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft
Shared\SERVER12\Server Setup Controller\wrapinst.exe' failed with error
code: 1603. Type: CommandFailed.
Error: Command: 'C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft

code: 1603. Type: CommandFailed.
Error: Command: 'C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft
Shared\SERVER12\Server Setup Controller\wrapinst.exe' failed with error
code: 1603. Type: CommandFailed.
Catalyst execution finished: 01/06/2007 22:35:39. Return code: 30008.
Exception caught: CommandFailed.

This issue occurs may because the language version of MSXML 6.0 does not
match the language version of WSS 3.0.

To resolve this issue, install the same language version of MSXML 6.0 and
WSS 3.0.

1. Download right language version of MSXML 6.0 for the following link:

Microsoft Core XML Services (MSXML) 6.0
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...BCF-3BCF-4009-
BE21-27E85E1857B1&displaylang=en

2. Please remove WSS 3.0 form SBS again

3. Please remove .net 3.0 from SBS again

4. Please empty the folder C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Local
Settings\Temp

5. Restart the SBS, press F8 and enter Safe Mode.

6. Install the MSXML 6.0

7. Install the .net 3.0

8. Install the WSS 3.0 again.

Is it fine? If not, please go to the following:

1. Set QMEnable to 0 under "Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Web Server
Extensions\12.0\WSS\Diagnostics"

2. Rerun the WSS 3.0 setup.

If the issue persists, please kindly help me collect whole logs again for
further investigation

Hope these steps will give you some help.

Thanks and have a nice day!

Best regards,

Terence Liu(MSFT)

Re: "Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 setup did not complete successfully" on SBS 2003

Hi Joseph,

Sorry but I have a bad english.

Few time a ago I have the same error, when I reinstall WSS 3.0.
Between installation I have desinstall little SQL 2005, and install SQL
2005 full version.

I read this post and follow all step that say Terence, but the error
follow.

Then I probe the last chance. In the server console, with the WSS 3.0
intall but not configurated I execute the psconfig command line in this
order (please read the helpof this command)

1. configdb
2. helpcollections
3. secureresources
4. services
5. installfeatures
6. adminvs
7. evalprovision (sólo para las instalaciones independientes)
8. applicationcontent

This configurate de WSS 3.0 in manual mode.

Re: "Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 setup did not complete successfully" on SBS 2003

Hi Terence

I was not able to install anything in safe mode (that is what I believe
was implied by your instructions), it said that it could not access the
installer service?

Anyway, I reinstalled the the applications you specified while in
windows and got the same error. I will be producing the logs the next
opportunity I have (soon).

Best Regards,

Joseph

Re: "Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 setup did not complete successfully" on SBS 2003

Hello Joseph,

Thank you for update.

You can not success install anything in safe mode may because the Windows
Installer service is not started.

Manually started the services related to installation in safe mode
----------------------------
1. Click Start, click Run, type "services.msc" (without the quotation
marks) in the Open box, and then click OK
2. Find Windows Installer Service. Right-click each of them and select Start

Then try to install the software as the steps in my previous reply.

If you still can not install software in safe mode, please try to do a
clean boot:

To clean boot the problematic computer, please use the steps below:
a. Click Start, click Run, and then in the Open box, type "MSCONFIG"
(without the quotation marks). Click OK.

b. In the System Configuration Utility (MSConfig) window, click to select
the Selective Startup button.

c. Click to clear the check mark from the "Load startup items" below
Selective Startup.

d. Click the Services tab, click to check the "Hide All Microsoft Services"
box, and remove all the check marks from the remained Non-Microsoft
Services. Please note that the Exchange services could be marked as
non-Microsoft. Please do not disable those services.

e. Click OK to close the MSConfig window. Click Yes when you are asked to
restart your computer in order to enable the changes.

And then manually started the Windows Installer Service. Then try to
install the software as the steps in my previous reply.

If the issue persists, please kindly help me collect whole logs again for
further investigation

Hope these steps will give you some help.

Thanks and have a nice day!

Best regards,

Terence Liu(MSFT)

Sorry for the delay, this is still an issue, but I've been sent out of
state until February... I will definitely perform the below once I
return. I would appreciate keeping this thread open until I return!
Thanks again for the help
