You don't. That's *their* mail server configuration. Chances are that you've been caught in the middle of the recipient domain changing their mail service provision or some such. Either that, or their provider has screwed up. Either way, you need to talk to the folks at the recipient domain. -- Steve Foster [SBS MVP] --------------------------------------- MVPs do not work for Microsoft. I am the folks at the recipient domain. This is a client of mine, I need to do this. Sorry for any confusion. I will rephrase the question How do I modify a rcpthosts file to allow a domain that isn't in a list of allowed rcpthosts ?? | Re: Modify rcpthost to allow a certain domain *sigh* Let me try this a different way. 1. This is a newsgroup for posting issues relating to Microsoft Small Business Server (SBS). 2. A rcpthosts file is a file on a mail server (mainly Qmail) containing a list of approved/unapproved recipient domain hosts. Qmail, and other variant servers based upon it has nothing to do with SBS. Now, let me ask again. Are you asking how to edit a rcpthosts file on a SBS newsgroup? Well considering the orginal error I posted is form an SBS 2003 /Exchange Setup. YES. Or you might try looking at this: http://www.zenspider.com/Admin/AddingDomains.html for some basics. Beyond that, this question should be directed to a unix/linux/BSD/whatever newsgroup. It's not really appropriate for an SBS forum, is it, really. -- Steve Foster [SBS MVP] --------------------------------------- MVPs do not work for Microsoft. Please reply only to the newsgroups. |

| Re: Modify rcpthost to allow a certain domain As you were told in the original response, that message was just informing you what some *other* (supposedly yours which I now doubt) email server told it. And since you then stated that the responding server on which the rcpthosts file needing editing was *your* server and that you were the administrator, you'll have to understand that I at least thought the administrator of a mail server would know *what* operating system and type of mail server they were supposed to be administrator of. But that's just me. If I'm driving my Ford car and run into your Chevrolet car, does that mean I take it to the Chevrolet dealership to get it fixed? >Well considering the orginal error I posted is form an SBS 2003 /Exchange >Setup. | Re: Modify rcpthost to allow a certain domain
Why is this not really appropriate for an SBS forum ? The original error is being generated from SBS2003 "Steve Foster [SBS MVP]" <steve.foster@picamar.co.uk> wrote in message news:xn0ev2r3t2gm9vj00d@msnews.microsoft.com... > Mark Gibbons wrote: > >>I am the folks at the recipient domain. This is a client of mine, I need >>to do this. >> >>Sorry for any confusion. | Re: Modify rcpthost to allow a certain domain NO, IT IS NOT. Please, if you are going to bother posting then at least bother reading and trying to understand the responses. The SBS server has an event in its Event Log which is telling you *WHY* the *RECIPIENTS* email server rejected its email. The RECIPIENTS email server is the only thing that can be changed that will allow the email. *YOU* said that YOU are the administrator of the RECIPIENTS email server. Therefore YOU need to make a change to the rcpthosts file on the RECIPIENTS server.....which is NOT a SBS computer. The SBS computer does *NOT* have a problem and does *NOT* need to be changed in any way. >The original error is being generated from SBS2003 -- admin Matt Ridings - MSR Consulting ------------------------------------------------------------------------ admin's Profile: http://forums.msrportal.com/member.php?userid=1 View this thread: http://forums.msrportal.com/showthread.php?t=14355 |

Look sorry for my ignorance, But Does going to Default SMTP Virtual Server > Access > Relay Restrictions > and adding my IP to the allowed computer list > restarting the SMTP service, and having the client SBS2003 server no longer bounce email from My SBS2003 server, not make this a SBS issue ? | Re: Modify rcpthost to allow a certain domain Look, sorry if the response was 'strong' (and it was, my apologies). But how is anyone supposed to know that the recipient server is SBS based on your posts? (an intermediary smtp response message about a recipient server received on a sbs box is posted while your requesting how to manually edit a rcpthosts file) That implies you want to make a configuration change to a server other than exchange, and one most likely on a unix box. *now* we can see the picture, but the prior one made no sense whatsoever. at least it sounds like you have it resolved, no thanks to me. -- admin Matt Ridings - MSR Consulting ------------------------------------------------------------------------ admin's Profile: http://forums.msrportal.com/member.php?userid=1 View this thread: http://forums.msrportal.com/showthread.php?t=14355 |

| Re: Modify rcpthost to allow a certain domain
because its something to be configured on the remote smtp instance.. sendmail/postfix/etc which would mean you have to ssh/telnet to the unix box, edit a few mail config files and probably bounce a couple of mail daemons on the unix server ot get it to accept your domain.... that is my take on whta i have read so far... |

Mark Gibbons wrote: >Why is this not really appropriate for an SBS forum ? > >The original error is being generated from SBS2003 > No, the SBS is simply passing along the message that was generated by a remote mail server, running some sort of unix mail server that uses a rcpthosts file, when the remote mail server rejected a mail message from the SBS server. The SBS is not at fault (assuming it hasn't been explicitly told to hand all mail for the specific domain to the specific remote mail server [which would be a non-standard configuration]). -- Steve Foster [SBS MVP] --------------------------------------- MVPs do not work for Microsoft.
