Just a thought... Have either of the Exchange database(s) exceeded the 16 GB limit? (assumes you're not running Exchange SP2 w/75 GB limit). -- Merv Porter [SBS-MVP] ============================ "Clare" <Clare@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:5E1DE12D-B0DA-46F7-846A-3C604F3E327E@microsoft.com... > Exchange went down over the weekend. | Re: can not Mount mailbox or public folders
This is entirly possible as several individuals whom were in over the weekend did received some large powerpoints via email. How do I check? Can I upgrade to Exchange SP2 to get the 75GB limit? The individual who received these large emails does not have their ouitlook cashed on their local machine, due to this - I think - can not access outlook at all. Also when the server was set up exchange and SQL server were set up on a 35GB partition. Which now only has 2.18GB avalible, this partition is also home to Program files:19.2GB, ClentAps:1GB and Backup Systemstate:2.13GB Thanks, Clare "Merv Porter [SBS-MVP]" wrote: > Just a thought... | Re: can not Mount mailbox or public folders
Hi again, I just searched through tech net for exchange mailbox exceeding 16GB and found a response that I hope matches my issues "Subject: Re: How to reduce size of PRIV1.edb & stm?" It talks of possibly running defrag to reduce the mailbox size. I analyzed local disk C yesterday, SBs said that I should run a defrag, but my question is, is this a good starting point and do I need to wait untill the weekend/evening to do this due to users continually requiring access to the server? Thanks again, Clare "Merv Porter [SBS-MVP]" wrote: > Just a thought... Have either of the Exchange database(s) exceeded the 16 GB > limit? | Re: can not Mount mailbox or public folders
Before you do anything with Exchange, you really want to move the databases to different partition or drive to make sure the databases have room to grow. (Other people here may have additional suggestions). Moving Data Folders for Windows Small Business Server 2003 http://www.microsoft.com/technet/pro.../movedata.mspx Running a Exchange defrag may not get you where you need to be. And your users will not receive any new mail until the problem is fixed. (I presume you have a backup mail server that is collecting [queuing] the mail until you get this problem fixed). You should follow the steps in this KB article to temporarily increase the capacity of your priv1.edb database to 18 GB (but download or accept any new mail until you have Exchange 2003 SP2 installed). You may need to disconnect the server from the Internet, or at least shut down all Exchange services, so mail does not flow into your Exchange databases while you are implementing the fix. Exchange Server 2003 mailbox store does not mount when the mailbox store database reaches the 16-GB limit http://support.microsoft.com/kb/828070/ Then download and install Exchange SP2 and do the registry edits to increase the database capacities to somewhere between 18 GB and 75 GB. | Re: can not Mount mailbox or public folders
Merve, Thanks for all the assistance, onle last question before I install Exchange SP2, I've had some assistance from an old collegue who wants to move the current exchange database onto the partition that has all our employee data. We have two partitions on the hard drive, c: 36GB and h: 341GB (206GB free). I am concerned that Exchange will eat up all avalile space on the H drive if it is relocated there. Is this a valid concern? Should/Can a additional partition be created to prevent exchange from interacting with all my employee data? Thanks again, Clare "Merv Porter [SBS-MVP]" wrote: > Before you do anything with Exchange, you really want to move the databases > to different partition or drive to make sure the databases have room to > grow. | Re: can not Mount mailbox or public folders
Exchange SP2 has a maximum limit of 75 GB per database (the public and the private databases). Out of the box, Exchange 2003 SP2 is set for a max of 18 GB per database. To get the 75 GB (or to set the limit to anything between 18 and 75 GB), you need to go into the registry on the server and change the settings. Explaining the Database size limit changes in Exchange 2003 Service Pack 2 http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/...ce-Pack-2.html So, even if you set both Exchange databases to 75 GB each, that would only max out to 150 GB total (much less than the 206 GB free space now available on your H: drive). I think moving the Exchange databases to the H: drive may be a good ideas. However, I suspect the Volume Shadow Copy (VSS) is also activiated on the H: drive (may not be for the C: drive) since that partition contains the User Shared Folders. More space will alos be chewed up when you move the Exchange databases to the H: drive. I don't know of a way to exclude the Exchange folders (or any folders) from VSS. It's an all or nothing thing for the partition. Creating a separate partition for the Exchange databases would be preferred. You may be able to image the server with something like Ghost 2003 and then restore while adjusting the partition sizes, leaving you with some extra unallocated space space to which could be turned into a new partition. Or, you could use a 3rd party partition utility (like maybe Partition Magic) to do it without imaging/restoring. Maybe someone else can provide more info or ideas here. -- Merv Porter [SBS-MVP] ============================ "Clare" <Clare@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:B13D0403-8B87-47F2-9C7B-2026AEFF74FD@microsoft.com... > Merve, > > Thanks for all the assistance, onle last question before I install > Exchange > SP2, I've had some assistance from an old collegue who wants to move the > current exchange database onto the partition that has all our employee > data. > We have two partitions on the hard drive, c: 36GB and h: 341GB (206GB > free). > > I am concerned that Exchange will eat up all avalile space on the H drive > if > it is relocated there.
