Server Stuck at "Applying Personal Settings" & Clients stuck at "Applying Computer Settings"

Hi

We have a SBS 2003 Premium with no service pack.

This evening a client machine locked up (the only one running at the time)
and then then we found the server has also locked up.

The client was rebooted and another was booted one is frozen at Applying
Computer Settings the other at Applying Personal Settings.

We have attempted to login to the server and are stuck at Applying Personal
Settings.

The only change we have made to the machine is that earlier today we started
using NOD antivirus Remote Administrator which was accepting client computer
information. Although there is a log file limit, my thoughts were that the
log files may have filled up the System Drive, but this is just a shot in
the dark.

Where should I go from here, I am about to travel to the site (I have been
speaking to staff over the phone). What is my best method of getting into
the server?

Thanks
B

Sorry Ben, I had not finish the previous reply....

I had the same once and it happened to be the APC UPS software that needed
an update because of a conflict with a Norton install/update.
Have a read on the APC website support/helpdesk section as well as Norton's.

Cheers

Re: Server Stuck at "Applying Personal Settings" & Clients stuck at "Applying Computer Settings"

Hi Gabriel,

I actually had the problem you speak of with APC shutdown software where the
Java Certificate had expired.

We are not running Norton (we are running NOD32 Antivirus) and had updated
APC to the most recient version back then.... but not to say this isnt the
problem.

I managed to get into the server, by the time I had driven to the site about
an hour and a half away it had logged in.

The explorer appeared to have crashed. I managed to get into task manager
and get a run command from there and run the Event Viewer.

There are no relevent event logs apart from Exchange Reporting that the
Active Directory was inaccessable and it reported that every few seconds for
since 7pm (its now 12:30 am).

I managed to open Services and shut down the Exchange Services, I then
proceeded to shutdown the SQL Server Services but they remained in the
stopping state.

The disk space was fine so no problems there, could this just be a crash?

I am currently rebooting, it has been "logging off" for almost 30 mins now.
Im starting to think it is not going to do it, but im being patient.

Should I resort to powering off? In case it makes any diffence its a Dell
PE 2600 Server with Hardware RAID 0 System Disks and Hardware RAID 5 Data
Disks with battery backup.

Any advice would be very appreciated.

Thanks

B

Re: Server Stuck at "Applying Personal Settings" & Clients stuck at "Applying Computer Settings"

Hi Ben

It is quite obvious that something is hanging the machine, sorry don't know
where I came up with the Norton, must be because I had Norton that had a
problem with the Java update like you discovered.

I use NOD32 myself with the Remote admin on SBS2003 standard. I have not
experienced any problems. The one time another thing that hung my server was
an AV update, can you log into safe mode and roll back the updates of the
latest AV and see if that helps? Anything on the NOD32 website that could
cause this?

Did the server auto install any MS updates that you could roll back and see
if that caused it?

Good luck

Re: Server Stuck at "Applying Personal Settings" & Clients stuck at "Applying Computer Settings"

Thanks Gabriel

I ended up powering it down after waiting an hour for it to log off.

Booted it and there was no reason for the crash, it just appears to have
crashed!

Anyways I have updated the APC software again just in case.

Thank you for your help,

Regards

Simon
