message "Backup failed"

Source : VSS
Category : None
Event ID : 12302
Description :
Volume Shadow Copy Service error: An internal inconsistency was
detected in trying to contact shadow copy service writers. Please
check to see that the Event Service and Volume Shadow Copy Service are

RE: problem with "Volume Shadow Copy Service" event 12302

Hi Tomas,

Thanks for posting here.

From your post, my understanding on the issue is: you received the Event
12302 from VSS on a Windows Server 2003 after you applied SP1 for Windows
server 2003. If I am off base, please feel free to let me know.

Based on my experience, I suggest you try the following steps to solve this
issue:

Suggestion 1: Re-register some dll files
--------------------------------------
Based on my research, this problem may occur when some .dll files are not
registered properly. Let us perform the following steps to register them:

1. Click Start -> Run.
2. Type the following commands one by one in the text box to register them:

regsrv32 ole32.dll
regsrv32 sqlvdi.dll

3. Restart the server to test this issue again.

Suggestion 2: Install hot fix
-----------------------------
Have you installed hotfix 833167? If not, I suggest that you install the
hot fix and then restart the server to test this issue again.

833167 A Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) update package is available for
Windows Server 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=833167

Suggestion 3: Check Visio key
-----------------------------
Have you ever installed Visio? If so, please backup and delete the
[HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlset\Control\ContentIndex\Catalogs\visio]
registry key to test this issue again. It is reported that the key may not
be deleted when you uninstall Visio. This may cause this issue.

Does it work now? If this problem continues, please help me collect the
VssDiag log so that I can perform further research on this issue, to do so,
please perform the following steps:

1. Please run the command "reg.exe add
hklm\system\currentcontrolset\services\vss\diag /ve /d Enabled". This will
enable VSS diagnose, that is very useful to diagnose these types of errors.
2. Reboot the server.
3. Immediately after the problem reproduces, please ask the customer to run
the command "REG EXPORT hklm\system\currentcontrolset\services\vss\diag
VssDiag.reg"

Please zip the VssDiag.reg file and then send this file to my work address:
v-stezhu@microsoft.com. As our email system blocks files with .reg file
extension, please zip this file before you send it.

I hope the above information helps.

Have a nice day.

Best Regards,

Steven Zhu
