Adding Licenses does not work: Activation.exe closes with error

I cannot manage to add new licenses to a Small Business Server 2003.
Last year it worked fine we added 4 times 5 licenses.
But now the activation.exe quits with errors:
The first message is:
The instruction at "0x000bb918" referenced memory at "0x00bb918" the memory
could not be "written".
The appliacation log shows:
Faulting application Activation.exe, version 0.0.0.0, faulting module
ntdll.dll, version 5.2.3790.1830, fault address 0x00053430.
I could only find some hints concerning MS Money, but this programm is not
installed on this server.
Does anyone know how to overcome this problem ?

RE: Adding Licenses does not work: Activation.exe closes with error

HI,

Welcome to SBS newsgroup.

Issue description:
================

I understand that you encountered problem when add new license to SBS
server.

Analyzing and suggestion:
=================

Generally speaking, the issue should be caused by the license component
have been corrupt on SBS server, you can refer to my suggestion below:

1. Click Start, click Run, type "mmc" and click OK.
2. Click Add/Remove Snap-in on the Console menu.
3. Click Add in the Add/Remove Snap-in dialog box.
4. In the Add Standalone Snap-in dialog box, click the Small Business
Server Licensing snap-in, click Add, click Close, and then click OK.
5. Right-click "Small Business Server Licensing" in the left pane, point to
All Tasks and click Add Licenses.
6. Follow the instructions to add the licenses.

If you still get the same error, click Start, click Run, type "C:\Program
Files\Windows for Small Business Server\Licensing\Activation.exe" and click
OK. Follow the instructions to add the licenses, does the problem still
persists?

1. Click Start, point to Control Panel and click Add or Remove Programs.
2. Select "Windows Small Business Server 2003" and click Change/Remove.
3. In the "Component Selection" page, change Action to Reinstall for Server
Tools. Follow the instructions to finish.
4. If you do not see "Windows Small Business Server 2003" in Add or Remove
Programs, run Microsoft Windows Small Business Server Setup from SBS
installation CD #1.

I appreciate your understanding on this issue, please feel free to let me
know the results. I am glad to be of assistance.

Best regards,

Charles Yang (MSFT)

RE: Adding Licenses does not work: Activation.exe closes with error

HI,

Thanks for updates.

From your description, it seems the license issue still not work for you.
We suggest you make a clean boot to isolate if the issue is caused by the
third party software, you can make a clean boot as following steps:

A. Click Start, click Run, type "msconfig" (without the quotation marks)
and click OK.
B. Select "Selective Startup" and remove the checks from each item below
the Selective Startup option.
C. On the "Services" tab, click Enable All.
D. Check "Hide all Microsoft Services", click Disable All and clear "Hide
all Microsoft Services".
E. Click the OK button and then Click Yes to restart your computer.
F. Try again.

After make the clean boot if the issue still exists, please replace the
file ntdll.dll with the one on SBS CD to see if the issue can be resolved,
as I know ntdll.dll should be important file on SBS server, it might be
some third party software that crash or impact this dll file.

Thanks for your understand here.

RE: Adding Licenses does not work: Activation.exe closes with erro

Hi Charles,
it sounded like good advice, but it did not work. I disabled all none
microsoft services and replaced ntdll.dll by the original version
5.2.3790.1830 from the installation CD.
The problem is still the same.
I got the tip, that this might be caused by a bad configured trendmicro
virus scanner.
I tried to download the description from www.sbsfaq.com but the server has a
very poor connection, so that the download did not work up to now.
Have you any idea how to solve this problem, otherwise next week we might
have several colleques without access to this server.
best regards
Uwe Sczech

RE: Adding Licenses does not work: Activation.exe closes with erro

Hello Uwe,

Thank you for posting back!

I am sorry for the delayed response due to the weekend. Please understand
that the newsgroups are staffed weekdays by Microsoft Support professionals
to answer your systems and applications questions. Your understanding is
greatly appreciated!

Uwe, I am Charles' colleague Brandy. Currently, Charles is taking leaves
now and I will continue work with you on this issue.

I have reviewed the whole thread, and I need your help to gather following
information for research. Please see:

1. How did you add Licenses on the SBS 2K3 Server? Please fully describe
your steps.

2. At which step you encountered the error message? I strongly suggest that
you capture a screen shot for it and send it to the Newsgroup, so we can
better understand your scenario.

3. On the server, run "eventvwr" (without quotation marks), check whether
there are any errors. If yes, double click it, click the Copy button and
paste the full content to the Newsgroup.

[Note]: Do not edit or delete any results.

4. What is your SBS Server Edition, Standard or Premium?

Please take your time to perform the steps and I am looking forward to
hearing from you!

Best regards,

Brandy Nee

the error was allways the same!
3. errors are only reported to the application log in the following sequence:

RE: Adding Licenses does not work: Activation.exe closes with erro

Hello Uwe,

Thank you for posting back!

From the Event ID 1000 description, it appears that the License component
is not in the good status. I suggest the following steps to reinstall the
SBS License component:

1) Rename the existing folder C:\Program Files\Windows for Small Business
Server\Licensing.

2) Create a new folder C:\Program Files\Windows for Small Business
Server\Licensing.

3) Copy the following files from C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Integration\Windows Small Business Server 2003 to the new C:\Program
Files\Windows for Small Business Server\Licensing:
Activation.exe
actwizdll.dll
bkupwiz.exe
bkupwizdll.dll
caleula.txt
licdlgctrl.dll
licenseagreement.htm
restwiz.exe
sbslicsnap.dll
sbsprivacy.htm
transfer.exe

4) Register the following DLLs using Regsvr32:

" Program Files\Windows for Small Business
Server\Administration\wizchain.dll
" Program Files\Windows for Small Business Server\Licensing\actwizdll.dll,
" Program Files\Windows for Small Business Server\Licensing\licdlgctrl.dll
" Program Files\Windows for Small Business Server\Licensing\sbslicsnap.dll
" Program Files\Windows for Small Business Server\Monitoring\mssbsmsgs.dll

5) Test the issue again.

=================

If the issue persists, please help me gather following information for
further research:

a. When you going to Start -> Administrative Tools -> Licensing -> Add
license, do you encountered any error message? If yes, please capture a
screen shot and send it to me.

RE: Adding Licenses does not work: Activation.exe closes with erro

Hello Brandy,
sorry for the late reply, but there was allways an error message when I
tried to access the forum ...
I tried to perform the steps you described but when I tried to register the
mssbsmsgs.dll there pops up an error:
"C:\ ....\mssbsmsgs.dll was loaded but but the DLLRegisterServr entry Pont
was not found.
This File cannot be registered"
I replaced the file with a version from the installation CD but the error
persists.
The version and date of the file didn`t change ...
Any more ideas ?
This seems realy tricky to me ...
best regards

Hello Uwe,

Thank you for posting back! I am the owner of this newsgroup and I will be Brandy's backup during her leave.

I reviewed the thread and I understand the issue is that you cannot add licenses and the Activation.exe program always quit execution. Based on my experience, this issue
could occur if the pidgen2.dll file is corrupted. I suggest you Replaced the pidgen2.dll in Windows\System32 with a copy from the SBS installation CD. Restart the server
and check if you can add licenses.

Please do not hesitate to let me know if you have any further concerns.

Sincerely,

Cliff Zhang
