| error - Windows can not connect to the domain...domain controller
#1 Briefly here's the sequence: - Running SBS2003 network - Client machine is wireless laptop running XP Pro - Want to connect this client to network - Set up client computer account on server - Set up user account on server - ran \connectComputer on client - I logged in as network administrator - Migrated user profile to maintain the users settings - no errors in this process - On reboot can only login locally as user, not to domain - When I try to login to the domain (which shows up as an option) using the login name of the user account as set up on server I get the error msg: "Windows can not connect to the domain either because the domain controller is down or otherwise unavailable, or because your computer account was not found...." I checked computer account on server Properties of client computer show nothing for the DNS name Question: Should I just rerun \connectComputer or should I delete the computer and user accounts, recreate them and the run \connectComputer? #2 - Also, when setting up the client account on the server/client applications page, if the client has Office 2003 installed and is updated do I need to check IE6 and Outlook 2003? or have checked the "During Client Setup, allow the selected applications to be modified"? I'm not sure of the relationships here and what's going on in the background. |

I got the same problem last week with a win2000 machine. But I just re ran the wizard after i changed back to workgroup, and the second time it worked. Will look forward to the result of this discussion. After the First reboot on connect computer you come to computer logon. The logon should be as Domain administrator until the setup script has run. The next login can be as the user. Login with an account is not OK, but on the same PC with another account is OK. Domain name is reset. |

| Re: error - Windows can not connect to the domain...domain control
This is what I've done... ON SERVER: Removed computer Removed user Then recreated new user and new computer accounts (still on server). On client laptop: Logged on as Administrator. Ran /connectcomputer wizard Got message that the computer is already connected to the domain. I have attemped to connect the user before. Proceeded and tried to migrate local user settings got the private files error. I have found the support document document: Article ID : 886210 Last Review : October 15, 2004 Revision : 1.0 "The following user settings are private" error message when you try to migrate a user's profile to Windows Small Business Server 2003 http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;886210 which says to delete the files in temp directory listed in the log file as returned true for private... Shall I proceed with this then rerun the /connectcomputer wizard? If it helps it seems this happens when, as I create a user account, I do not select the check box to create a computer account. I do not select this checkbox if I have already created an account on the server for that client computer. I tried this once before and the user profile ended up embedded in the Administrator profile and I had to do a system restore to get the users email back. This might not be related though... Also as far as the client computer already being connected to the domain. Do I need to remove this status if I am migrating the user with the new Computer and user accounts I set up on the server? ....wondering how to do this |

I changed the pc to workgroup from domain without deleting the computer from ADUC in the server and after restarting the pc, again I rejoined the pc to the domain controller. After joining the pc to the domain I logged in as the same user but I lost the user's previous profile (Included the Internal & External Mail). My question is, can I recover the profile? If yes please let me know how can I recover? I have already took the desktop backup etc. I have lost my outlook express & MS-OUTLOOK 2003 mailbox which I am using for external mails. I recovered the internal mails but I want to recover the external mailbox for the user, how can I recover? I did not understand the following sentence. Search Engines will flush out the details. Could you please explain this? And Mr. Larry I would also want to know how can I find the current profile I am running. My Profile names are as follows: syed.IT syed.IT.000 == I want to know which is the Current & which is old profile. Can I delete old profile? If yes, let me know how? So, I can free up the C:\ space. And let me know that, can I log in to two profiles? If yes how can I? |

If SBS 2003, where all the users and computers created with the Wizards? Is this user able to logon from a different computer? Is the account active? What exactly is the error message? Is the account name spelled as you expect? I have seen a typo appear in the account name, which you can check in ADUC - user - properties. Log on to the station as the domain admin, browse to the old users folders and copy out what you need to the new users identical folders. Usually, desktop, favorites and my documents are the ones you will need. They are in that users profile under "local settings". You may have to change the view options to show all folders, but you are looking for .pst and .dbx files, then copy all of those into the same folders for the new user. Or better, use a different folder, I *never* leave them there as they are hard to find, so I put them in (drive_letter)\Outlook and OLE. Once you have found and moved them, you can set the programs to look in the folder you specify for the data files. Search Engines will flush out the details. Search engines will flush out the details of how to specify the methods to connect your programs, Outlook and OLE to the folder where you have stored the relocated data files. |

| Re: error - Windows can not connect to the domain...domain controller
Questions about how to move and connect to outlook and outlook express data files are probably best asked in an Outlook forum. There is nothing SBS specific about this. In general, just open outlook or outlook express and look at the settings. In Outlook the data files are controlled under File - Data File Management. In Outlook Express, truthfully, I have forgotten, as it has been since I stopped using XP that I have had OLE to play with. Try a similar menu list, or look under Tools. Really, once you find the appropriate menu item, you can connect to the .pst file (Outlook) or the .dbx files (OLE) that are anywhere you have permissions to go. Note that in all cases these files should be on a local hard drive. |

Hi, if you haven't tried this, please check if the user end PC had a different MAC Address registered in DHCP on domain controller, or probably there are 2 NIC, one of the NIC were registered in "Reservations" in DHCP. |
