POP3SVC Error 0x8004050a occurred while rendering message

I am running SBS 2003 SP1 fully patched and all windows updates installed. Whenever a user on this server tries downloading messages, we get the following error in event viewer:

I have no idea what to do with this. Also there is nothing available on Microsoft Sites regarding this error message. Somebody here please help me out with working solution. Regards.

The main cause behind this problem is because all emails use to contains S/MIME digital signature which is obtained from MS Exchange 2003 server SP1. And as per your event log it occurs when you use Post Office Protocol version 3 (POP3) or Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) version 4rev1 (IMAP4) to download the message in Outlook Express. Anyways, the best way to solve this problem is applying the hotfix by Microsoft. But there is a small problem as it is only for correcting the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

Help appreciated unidentified. Meanwhile I found a solution but it was also related to the imap4svc service. People said that I’ll need to call Microsoft by spending few dollars which I don’t want o do as if it's unrelated to my POP3 service error. Any suggestion?

I think the cause of this issue is anti-virus software installed on the Exchange Server. You can check and analyze this by going to “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeIS\VirusScan”

See if the Exchange-aware AV is enabled. If the value is set to 1 it means it is enabled. Simply call up your antivirus support and tell ask them for engine update. This will fix the issue permanently.
