"An error occurred while creating distribution groups"

I'm getting the following trying to install the Intranet component and
the same when trying to apply SP1:-

"An error occurred while creating distribution
groups. Open Active Directory Users and Computers, and
manually create a test distribution group to verify that
Active Directory is running. Rerun setup."

I've already seen Ray Fong's answer about registering Wizchain.dll,
which I've done but I still get the fault.

What next can I try?

Incidentally its on a Dell Poweredge 2600 and there was a further
reference to this on Dells by Susan Bradley but the link given seems to
be broken now.

RE: "An error occurred while creating distribution groups"

HI,

Welcome to our SBS newsgroup.

Issue description:

From your description, I understand that you encountered an error when
install intranet components, it is also occur when apply SBS SP1.

Analyzing and suggestions:

If re-registering the dll does not resolve it, please search for a file
named errorlog.txt. This will provide some additional details that may be
helpful.

The most common cause is duplicate entries in Active Directory.

We will likely need to go through the ENTIRE Active Directory Users and
Computers, making sure all SBS default users and groups exist under the
MyBusiness and it's child OU.

Also, verify the Display Name, Group Name (Pre-Windows 2000), Description,
and Members are correct.

If you see any additional users and groups with similar names (in
particular share very similar Display Name or Group name (pre-Windows
2000)), you should remove these extra users/groups and then run SBS
integrated setup again.

As I know, this issue could also occur if you entered a very long
organization name when you did the setup. For example, if you enter the
following string as the organization name, the setup will error out:

Charles Yang Company Limited, D.D.S.

You'd better use a organization name with less than 20 characters
(including the blanks) and re-do the setup. For example:

Charles Yang Ltd.

If the issue still occurs, please go to the C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Integration\Windows Small Business Server 2003\Logs folder, and paste the
files errorlog.txt to newsgroup for further research.

Thanks for your understanding, if you have any further concerns, please let
me know. I will be here waiting for your updates.

Best regards,

Charles Yang (MSFT)

Re: "An error occurred while creating distribution groups"

Thanks for your detailed reply, Charles.
Having manually registered wizchain.dll, the SP1 setup did actually
complete in the end (previously it was just halting with a fatal error)
but it still reported problems and I've copied the contents of the
errorlog.txt below.
You'll see that the org name is 21 chars (my predecessor had used an
"&" instead of "and" in the middle and that had really caused other
problems on the old NT4 servers). Do you think I should rename the
organisation? If so what would the impact be elsewhere?

Thanks,
Alex Bailey

Re: "An error occurred while creating distribution groups"

Hi Alex,

Thanks for your emails.

According to your description, I checked your log files, I found the error
is the non fatal error, you can ignore it.

Regarding the org name, Exchange 200x does not support the following
characters either in organization names or in administrative group names,
from your description, it seems you add $ in your organaization name.

- comma (,)
- period (.)
- tilde (~)
- grave accent (`)
- exclamation point (!)
- at sign (@)
- number sign (#)
- dollar sign ($)
- percent (%)
- caret (^)
- ampersand (&)
- asterisk (*)
- parentheses (())
- underscore (_)
- plus sign (+)
- equal sign (=)
- braces ({})
- brackets ([])
- backslash (\)
- colon (:)
- semicolon (;)
- quotation marks (")
- single quotation marks (')
- angle brackets (< >)
- question mark (?)
- slash mark (/)

You may follow the steps below to rename the org name:

0. Make a full backup of your server.
1. Copy all user mail to Personal Folders (PST file).
2. Copy all Public Folders to Personal Folders (PST file).
3. Remove and reinstall Microsoft Exchange. You may have to manually remove
Exchange if it fails when you run the SBS Setup to remove Exchange:

833396 How to remove Exchange Server 2003 from your computer
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=833396

4. Import the mailbox and Public Folder information from the PST file(s)
created in steps 1 and 2.

Although we can change the organization name by using legacydn.exe without
reinstalling Exchange, but this is only useful in disaster recovery
situations. The only reason to do this on a working Exchange 200x system is
if you are restoring a backup where the organization name and/or
administrative group names don't match.

If you use legacydn on a running server you might just break Exchange, the
stores won't mount, as legacydn may not catch everything in AD on a
production server. And you'll end up removing Exchange completely and
having to start over with setup.exe /forestprep to get things going again.

The best way to change the organization name of the Exchange server is to
uninstall and then re-install Exchange.

Administrative Group names in Exchange Server 2003 or in Exchange 2000

Hope the above information helpful, if you have any further concerns,
please let me know. I will be here waiting for your updates.

Re: "An error occurred while creating distribution groups"

Thanks Charles,
I guess the manual registering of wizchain.dll had indeed helped make
some progress towards completing the Intranet components and SP1 setup.
As you say, the last errors were non-fatal.
The organisation name has no longer got an "&" (ampersand) in it since
I migrated from the old NT4 server to SBS2003 but it is 21 characters
long and I read a mention somewhere else of problems over 20
characters.

Regards,
Alex.

Hi Pablosty,

Not sure what you mean, problem with OU's. Are you saying you've cusomized
the default SBS OU's? You have lots of errors; the one you post about is
simply the last one in the list.
