The active directory is like an big book that works on a computer server, it allows you to manage the various elements of a network such as shared folders, network users, groups, and many others. Objects that are used in active directory are users logins, groups, computers, etc. There are certain classes in which they are divided. This categories of objects carries similar kind of same attributes. Some objects on active directory carries more objects in side them which are referred as containers. It is used for grouping objects. Leaf is the lowest level of object. An entire setup of containers and leaves are called as Tree. This an common term which you will notice when you will setup multiple servers. Number of domains are interrelated here and works in a similar pattern. A bigger group is called as forest. There are many trees in this. |

Active directory setup is not so tough if you have a basic knowledge of server setup. Run dcpromo command to start the setup. You can see an installation wizard that can guide for the setup process. Now you can add a domain controller which is already created by you. You can try configuring second active directory in case of any issue. Now you just need add the domain name you want to have, it can be any name with any extension. I will advice you to leave the default one and go further. Preferably and for safety it is good to store the database and the log on another disk. Click on Browse to select a new directory in which to store your log files and your active directory database. From here you can configure your database and other configuration. |

I have some steps that can help you to configure active directory. If you are trying to install the active directory then before starting the installation of our active directory and make sure that dns server is configured on a static IP address of your server. Check and be careful in the name of your server, not the name of this machine is already used on the network and that would cause a duplicate. |

| Re: How active directory works in Windows Server
Active Directory in Windows Server is used to represent and store the components of the network. This are the not only the computing resources but also users that work on the a network. They are stored as an object, that is to say a set of attributes. All the objects that are stored by active directory are simply organized hierarchically in a pattern. This pattern itself stored in the directory defines the attributes and arrangement of objects. This is an bit complex to tell but you can say like it is an tree of objects and user which are configured on the active directory. By using this you can manage a number of users with ease. It is really an powerful tool provided on Windows Server. |
