Office 2007 slow to open files stored on SBS 2003

We are running SBS 2003 server with various Windows XP Pro Clients. Recently we changed two of our clients to Windows 7 64bit systems. We installed Office 2007 on these two PCs. Later when the users tried opening MS Word or Excel files saved on our server, they get 15 to 20 seconds delay in opening the file. As a troubleshooting I tried adding the .local domain name to the Win 7 Hosts file but it says I don’t have permission and access denied to Hosts file. I even tried running Notepad as Administrator in safe mode but that dint helped as well.

Is it just me with this problem or anyone else faced the same? Is there something like Office 2007 as problems working with files save on server? If no, is there any permanent solution for the same? Also why am I not able to edit the Hosts file in Windows 7 client? Please help.

I don’t think there should be any permission problem with editing Win 7 hosts file. Anyways, just try doing this. Click Start > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad. Right click Notepad and select Run as Admin. Now go to C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts, open it and try editing and saving the file. You should not get any problem now.

I think the problem is with NIC/driver issue. Just try updating your NIC drivers to the most recent version. Also ensure TCP, RSS is disabled on both client and server.

Thank you very much for the help guys. As suggested by one of my friend, I ran the SBS ConnectComputer wizard to attach both Windows 7 clients to domain. After doing this I noticed that the Hosts file is moved from C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\ to C:\windows\winsxs\amd64_microsoft-windows-w... I’m not sure but I guess this has changed the permissions as well. Still I’m not able to edit the hosts file.

As state by NavinS, I checked the NIC Drivers and are all up to date however I’m not sure about the offloading(TCP, RSS) is disabled or not. But still I’m not able to understand why the problem is only with Windows 7 clients where XP Pro users don’t face any such problem.

Anyways, if it helps, here is my ipconfig /all reports from this client and the server. First one is from my Client:

Well the ipconfig reports appears good on both systems. By the way are both the SBS and the Win7 systems fully patched up? I might try standard Windows and Microsoft Update on both, in addition to WSUS.You should also check for new NIC drivers and be sure all the stuff in the BPA is fixed.
