| It's BACK (expired certificate in SBS2003 install
Well, it appears that the fix that Microsoft supplied for the problems with installing SharePoint on SBS2k3 has just expired. (You know, the: "An error occurred while installing Windows SharePoint Services and creating your Intranet site.", during the intranet setup). I did a little poking around and the certificate on sqmcfg.dll expired on 11/24/2009. (Clearly I had the updated media) So, my question is what can I do about this? I need to get this installed for a customer now due to a hardware issue. (I will be pushing them to upgrade to the next SBS release) |

I'm confused on what the issue is? Create a new Self Signed Certificate? or Buy one from Godaddy and install it? And where exactly are you having this issue that the above won't solve it? Thanks |

Both would be great ideas, but I doubt that the installer would allow me to use my own certificate. The issue is that the file sqmcfg.dll is digitally signed by Microsoft and the certificate that they used expired on 11/24/2009 and therefore the installer (correctly) refuses to install it. I either need a work around or an updated file (which I guess would also be a workaround) This was a major issue back in early 2004 when the original certificate expired and Microsoft issued a replacement CD at the time. Now, the replacement has expired. |

Can you elaborate on that certificate please? Because I can't find anything on that file that seems like a digitally signed cert that is expired? Tom is this the issue? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/833019 |

Pretty much, except that I HAVE the updated media (on the original, that file expired on 11/24/2003, on the "updated" media it expires on 11/24/2009). Now, truth be told, I never expected to be doing new installs after this long, but this issue comes up again when you install the service packs (I have managed to get around it for now by setting the clock back a year during the install and while installing the SharePoint service packs, but there are still several updates that I can't install this way, if I do, then I get 403 (access denied) when trying to access company web.) What I have at this point is a SBS 2003 server (standard) that has been updated to the SBS SP1 + Exchange SP2 and Windows 2003 SP2. There are still 87 remaining updates to apply, but at least one of them breaks the company web (I haven't figured out which one yet, but it is a security update.) and I don't like to have this many un-installed updates around. |

If you right click on the file and display the properties there will be a digital signatures tab that allows you to view the certificate (you'll have to dig in several levels to get to the certificate itself). Is this original RTM media or recent media? Original + replacement CD(original cert problem fix), I believe. I'm downloading cd3 to confirm/deny. All of my SBS media is at the office. Set the date back to 11/23/2009 when you build the box, then reset it to the right date after you build it. |

We just got it confirmed that the media builds fine. I think then a Sharepoint or SQL service pack nailed you. The Official SBS Blog : Authentication Issues Accessing Companyweb from the Server Itself after 963027 or Windows 2008 SP 2: http://blogs.technet.com/sbs/archive...er-963027.aspx Check that out and report back. Temporarily set the date on the server back to an earlier date (when the code signing certificate is still valid). This is the same trick that worked on the original Gold RTM media. |

| Re: It's BACK (expired certificate in SBS2003 install
It is the replacement media from early 2004 (pre SP1 if that helps.) I was able to install this by setting the date back to 11/1/2009. I have companyweb working, but OWA is broken and I still have a bunch of updates that aren't installed since one of them breaks this again. (I haven't figured out which one yet) The only good thing is that I running this all under HyperV and can use the snapshot feature to test. I'm setting up a test case with a clean install from the media to see if this happens when not doing a swing. |

We can't get this to repro. Are you sure that it's not updates that are nailing you? Ensure you have flipped over to Microsoft update as there's post fix up patches for SBS. I'm going to install the test server right now, more in about an hour. |

My test server is down for the count. Looks like I'm going to have to replace the motherboard, so I can't do a proper test on that machine. I will setup and do this in a virtual machine under Windows 7 and let you know the results as soon as possible. |

Ok, I just finished with a clean install using the Action Pack Media (previously I used the customer's volume license media, but the results are the same) and I got the following error message at the end of the install: "An error occurred while installing windows SharePoint Services and creating your intranet site." When I try to access the "https://companyweb" site, I get a 403 error which begins "You are not authorized to view this page" For your reference, the exact media that I used for this is as follows: Disk1: X10-15014 Disk2: X10-15015 Disk3: X10-12491 (this is the replacement disk from early 2004) Disk4: X10-15020 (Outlook) I didn't install Disk 5 (this is a SBS2003 Premium disk set, previous install was customer's SBS Standard media with exactly the same results.) ** Tom ** BTW, does anybody know how I can get media with SP1 for a customer that have a volume license key? |

I don't think you even have to worry about the date with the install. The install fails with the error message described above (or below), but then all you have to do to fix the problem is apply this fix: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en |

What I meant to say is that even if you do the install with the old ("bad") media and let the install complete (but fail with the error message indicated) all you have to do to your system to fix it is run the hotfix from the link below. Simple. Call the VSLC licesning and order sp1 media would be my best recommendation. Can this media even still be ordered? I believe that they purchased the original media through OLV. And how would I contact VSLC? (A phone number would be nice.) |

Ummm, yes and no. You still have to set the date back to before 11/23/2009 before you run the hotfix. (I tried this and it works only when the date is set back). Also, there is still the problem with it breaking again every time that a service pack (sharepoint service pack that is) is applied and the the date isn't set back correctly. |

Chucko is the issue applying sharepoint service packs still leading to the error for you? IE did you find another solution to it? I believe I may be able to help you solve it so that you do not have to "workaround" the certificate error. |
