Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy

I have got a Dell Poweredge 2800 and Windows Small Business Server 2003 with Service Pack 2, 2gb of ram. When I am trying to make a System State backup then I am getting the below error message:

    Backup Status
    Operation: Backup
    Active backup destination: File
Media name: "Backup System State 09112009.bkf created 09/11/2009 at 11:30 p.m."

Volume shadow copy creation: Attempt 1.

Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:0x8004231f.

Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:8004231f
    Aborting Backup.

The C: drive has only 5% free space and I am trying to make the backup with an external hard drive. So, how do I make a system state backup properly? Thanks.

Re: Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy

The error message that you have posted seems to me like you are lacking free space. Incase if there is any data then try to move off your C: drive? If you cannot then you have to consider deleting the service pack or patch uninstall files, moving your page file, etc. You can try to download the Moving Data Folders for Windows Small Business Server 2003 document from the below link:

RE: Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy

You can also try to follow the below suggestions to fix this issue:

    1. First of all right click on the System drive, which might be the C: drive, and select properties, then on the Shadow Copies tab:
Try to delete one oldest snapshot
Also check if shadow copy still fails with same error
Again you can delete once more snapshot and try again.
    2. Lastly, still the issue is persisting then try to change the 'settings' of C: drive from "No limit" to "Use limit" value. You can click the Details button and use the Maximum size as the "Use limit" value.
