Unknown Error when Configure internet connection in SBS 2008

I am getting "unknown error" when run Internet connection wizard in SBS 2008.
I don't know where I am going to start to troubleshoot it. I have manually
entered my router IP address, and the SBS server IP address, but no go except
getting an unknown error.

And stranger enough, after the error, my SBS server IP address was changed
to use DHCP IP address not the static IP address, and the DNS server is
stopped on SBS server.

Please help.

Kevin

Re: Unknown Error when Configure internet connection in SBS 2008

Hi Kevin,

3rd party antivirus software blocking something? (disable, or better yet,
uninstall AV software on the server to test).

SBS 2008: CTIW fails to complete successfully

Thank, Merv.

Yes, after I disabled avg on the server, the CTIW runs successfully.

It seems I hear a lot of problems with AVG causing various issues with OS
funtions, and not just with SBS. I've used McAfee Enterprise with EPO and
McAfee GroupShield for Exchange for years and have never had a problem.

This is just an obversation and not an endorsement.

Post an ipconfig /all from a workstation and from the server.

Re: Unknown Error when Configure internet connection in SBS 2008

You might try... in the router, for DHCP services, specify only the DNS
Server as the IP address as of the SBS (not SBS and 64.65.208.6). Then try
CTIW again.

Re: Unknown Error when Configure internet connection in SBS 2008

I think it might be the disabled IPv6. Disabled in the registry but not on
the NIC results in a certain error in the CTIW.log. Disabling IPv6 on the NIC
gets past the original error (wouldn't find router; even after manually
entering IP and always failed with generic message), re-arranges DHCP, but
can't setup a scope of IPv6 in DHCP. Not sure how to disable IPv6 in DHCP,
but it seems like I'm chasing IPv6 components so I'm enabling IPv6 and will
see how far I get. Will need a reboot early tomorrow morning and I'll try
again.

Is this how you disabled IPv6?

Issues After Disabling IPv6 on Your NIC on SBS 2008

As Merv previously stated, you must remove 64.65.208.6 from the DHCP Scope
Options (Option 006). That IP address is an external DNS address. It has no
reference to your internal zone called "thoughtforms.local" which only
exists on your SBS DNS service.

Please remove that from the scope options, restart the workstations, and
re-run the wizard, as Merv suggested.

For efficient internet resolution, configure a forwarder. The following
shows how (scroll down to Forwarding in the link). Configuring a forwarder
is a DNS generic feature, which means it works the same for SBS and non-SBS.

Re: Unknown Error when Configure internet connection in SBS 2008

The 64... IP was previously and automatically removed by CTIW (wkst had a
previous DHCP lease). Not sure why I would need to remove this and restart
the WORKSTATION (as stated below); then re-run the wizard ?????

To humor you: DHCP does not have any external DNS referenced, I added DNS
forwarders and re-ran CTIW. I am presented with a message stating that CTIW
"Cannot configure IPv6 in DHCP..." (This is with IPv6 unchecked on the NIC).
Checking IPv6 on the NIC and re-running CTIW (as stated in another forum)
brings back a generic failure message in CTIW ("...Unknow error...).
