Adding CALS to SBS 2008

SBS 2008 Std

Where do you go in SBS 2008 to add more CALS (Product Keys) to the licensing
(already purchased CALS), or as I have read has MS just gone to an "honor"
system?

MS gone to honor system. So CALs right now are just a piece of paper on
contrary to SBS 2003 your do not enter them in the server.

If I may be so bold, may I suggest that if you are going to be supporting
SBS, you should get used to

1) Owning a good SBS book.
2) Subscribing the the official SBS blog.
and
3) Refer to the blog and FAQs for questions first.

In this case, your question is answered on the SBS product FAQ page *and*
the blog (and the blog links to the FAQ page!)
http://blogs.technet.com/sbs/archive...2008-cals.aspx

I suspected, but the book wasn't on the
bookshelf I was near at the time I was writing. :)

OK already. I don't need to be chastised twice by 2 different people in 2
days. Yes I am new to SBS 2008 and yes I have questions. I also take it
seriously that I try and find answers any place I can before I start asking
questions. It's just faster and I don't want to seem like a pest on this
newsgroup. I also respect the experienced opinions of people here on this
newsgroup. I have already ordered from Amazon the Windows Small Business
Server 2008 Unleashed as per Cliff's suggestions and up until now I have not
utilized http://blogs.technet.com/sbs/ unless it came back in a google
search. I will add that to my searches for answers. I also use Susan's SBS
Diva site as much as I can and subscribe to several Yahoo groups. But I
also don't want to feel afraid to be chastised for asking questions in a
newsgroup where it's a resource where you can ask questions looking for
answers.

I will do my best to seek answers on my own and learn. I've been in this
industry probably longer than most people here and SBS 2008 is very new to
me just like many others. I hope to be able to ask questions when necessary
and contribute back as much as I can. I've done alot of that with people
using SBS and Blackberry Professional which I have successfully implemented
and have created a very detailed installation document that I share with
anyone who asks for it.

I respect everyone's opinion and can't begin to show my GREAT appreciation
for responses to my questions, especially from all of the stalwarts here and
that includes you. Thanks for all of your help Cliff in taking the time to
answer my questions.

Re: Adding CALS to SBS 2008

Easy turbo. No need to get defensive. My answers are based on how much
effort I think a person has done to solve their own problem.

In this particular case, as I said, your question was answered on the SBS
product page, the SBS blog, and books. Yes you may not have a book yet, but
the official product FAQ should be a starting point for any question,
regardless of product. A person with the years of experience you have
should know this.

Also, you say you've never looked at the blug "unless it came back in a
google search." Your quote. This may seem harsh, but...

Of course you know how to use google, but lmgtfy also lets you see the
keywords I chose to use for this search, which was important in making my
point. I didn't have to go out of my way and "invent" a search to get the
results I wanted. That was the first one I tried. And as of the time I'm
typing this (y'never know, things could change by the time you read this)
the official SBS blog was the first result. A pretty reliable source.

So....yes...I responded with a rather bold and aggressive stance as, by
*all* appearances, no attempt was made on your part to find the answer
through other FREE (no book required) means. It wasn't an unreasonable
conclusion that I drew with the evidence I found.

So yes, you may not have appreciated the same advice from two different
people. But even at that, I tried to target my advice. I didn't tell you to
"get lost" but instead suggested that you make the SBS blog a *regular*
resource that you check. There is a difference between constructive
criticism and generic "chastising." You don't want to "feel afraid" because
you ask a question, but neither do I want to provide answers if I think
someone cannot handle criticism well and learn from it. That is a two way
street.

To sum it up, don't be afraid to ask. Just set your expectations
appropriately and accept the answers you are given, even if they aren't
necessarily the ones you want...and we'll continue to get along famously.

Re: Adding CALS to SBS 2008

Agreed. No need to get into a P match. Time to move on.

btw, the only reason I asked this question is because my initial searches
for answers were telling me that adding CALs was part of an "honor" system.
(found somehwere else from a google search). New concept compared to SBS
2003 so I wanted to make sure.

Re: Adding CALS to SBS 2008

I've been building stuff for 27 years.

In my experience, there is quite a difference between saying... "may I suggest you go 'here'
and

"may I suggest you better get used to going 'here'" or suggest "owning a good book"

One is polite. The other carries an undertone that is not respectful, unless it is between friends or colleagues, where each party knows each other well.

I suspect the younger than 30 age group are not as used to formal exchanges of information without undertones due to the prevalence of chat rooms, IM and other less formal arenas where common courtesy is left at the door. In this professional arena, it is like meeting someone in person and first utterance is "Good grief...Who cuts your hair?". It doesn't usually get the sale or a friendly response. Treat a stranger with respect and save the sarcasm for later.

As it is, the better answer was....

You are correct. It is an honour system and you can find more detail....here.

As it was, I googled "add user cals to sbs 2008" which I thought was a reasonable query.... which is why I ended up here, and interestingly, "the official SBS blog" doesn't show up for many pages and not before appearing amongst a myriad of non-english pages.

So to present such a query here is quite reasonable given the arena and its relevance to the query and it doesn't warrant a belittling reply.

I did enjoy your link... here's mine
