| Annoying "Print Notification Balloon" on XP Clients after installing SP3
Yesterday I installed XP SP3 on all our XP clients with 2003 SBS WSUS and we now get a print notification balloon. What has XP SP3 changed on XP Clients to cause this annoying print notification balloon to start appearing after sending documents to be printed? I have 28- XP Clients and they are all doing this now. Users are complaining, do I have to remove SP3 to fix this? I have Googled and tried several suggestions from Microsoft KB's and others without success. I don't want to completely shutdown the balloon notifications in Group Policy I just want to reverse this annoying print notification balloon that Microsoft caused. Why can't they (Microsoft) leave well enough alone and let IT staff or PC owners decide if they want these annoyances on? Signed, Frustrated! |

I'm not in front of an XP but I can get you close before you start replacing all your hardware : -) Open Printers and Faxes and go to File -> Server Properties. It's on the last tab, not sure what it's called, but there are check boxes for the notifications it generates. You may be able to set this in group policy, but it's probably simpler to just send out an e-mail to the users letting them know how to disable it. I hadn't noticed this in SP3 but I'm mostly on Vista and 7, and I'm guessing maybe the SP just reset the notification to its default. Hmmm, dunno how SP3 can *cause* this, but... Right click the PRN in question while holding the Control key - and click Server Properties. Turn off the PRN notification as required/desired. -- Duncan In article <eSsEU2p#JHA.4376@TK2MSFTNGP04.phx.gbl>, collinc@youngmfg.com says... > Yesterday I installed XP SP3 on all our XP clients with 2003 SBS WSUS > and we now get a print notification balloon. > > What has XP SP3 changed on XP Clients to cause > this annoying print notification balloon to start appearing after sending > documents to be printed? > > I have 28- XP Clients and they are all doing this now. > > Users are complaining, do I have to remove SP3 to fix this? > > I have Googled and tried several suggestions from Microsoft KB's and others > without success. | RE: Annoying "Print Notification Balloon" on XP Clients after installing SP3 Hi Collin, Thanks for your post and others' suggestions. In addition, you may also check the following printer settings: 1. Start-->>Printer and Faxes-->File-->Server Properties-->>Advanced Tab, 2. Make sure the check box is unchecked that says "Show informational notifications for local printers". These would include printers that are connected via LPR, LPT1, or any other local port. 3. If the printer is connected via UNC path then uncheck the box that says: "Show informational notifications for network printers" 4. Then stop and restart the Printer Spooler service. Does this issue still occur now? Hope this helps. Also, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to let me know.
