Second Domain Controller in SBS 2003 using Windows 2003 R2 Server

I know that there is a way to add a second domain controller for
windows 2008 server to SBS 2003 domain network. You do this usually
for backup purposes.I was wondering if anyone knows any official
documentation from Microsoft to add windows 2003 server R2 as
secondary domain controller to existing SBS 2003 domain.

I've found an unofficial tutorial about this from
http://www.smallbizserver.net/Articl...1/Default.aspx

I want to do the steps below (of course in production server). Please
help me to verify whether these steps is OK:

1. Insert Windows 2003 R2 CD (2nd CD) to SBS 2003 SP2 machine

2. Open the command prompt on the SBS server and navigate to the CD
drive. Then navigate to the Adprep folder with: cd CMPNENTS\R2\Adprep

3. Type the following command to prepare the Active Directory Forest:
adprep /forestprep

4. Assuming there are no Windows 2000 domain controllers that are not
up to date with SP4, type C and press Enter:

5. Depending on the SBS version, it can take 5 to 10 minutes before
the command has successfully finished:

6. Again on command line type: adprep /domainprep

7. Done.

8. Login to Windows 2003 R2 Server and then run DCPROMO

7. Done

Please correct me if there any caution/something wrong on the steps
above.

Thanks

Icel

this is correct, but there is little value to having a second DC unless it's going to be at a remote office

Is this DC going to be in a remote office? Or sitting next to the SBS server?

This DC will sitting next to the SBS server. I'll use it as a backup
DC. is there any something wrong if I set this DS sitting next to the
SBS server?

Many Thanks Cris.

It's not so much wrong as it's not so much good. Having a second DC side by
side the SBS server offers very little in terms of benifits to either the
end users or the SBS admin. There can be very negative consegquences if the
SBS admin isn't 'up on' AD replication and diligent in monitoring AD heatlh.

There are many other quality uses for a second server in SBS. SBS site DC#2
just isn't one of them.
