DNS - Network configuration

Problem:

* Unable to get to the internet through Internet Explorer
* Can see PCs on internal network
* Can ping loopback
* Can ping Gateway
* When I ping Yahoo.com or any URL, it returns the correct IP address but
gives the Request Time Out message.

Configuration:

* SBS 2003 server with one network card

* Network card configured as follows:

IP Address: 10.10.1.2
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 10.10.1.1
DNS server 10.10.1.2
Primary WINS 10.10.1.2

* Router/Gateway with internal address 10.10.1.1

* NIC has been configured with a 2nd DNS Server pointing to ISP DNS server
without success

* Server connected to switch.

* Router connected to switch.

*All other PCs that I configure using a static IP and the above NIC settings
(with the exception of the Primary and 2nd DNS servers being set to my ISPs
DNS servers) go to the internet with incident.

I'm sure it's a minor setting that's allowing full internet service on the
server and it's a good chance that this is also why I can't send or receive
internet mail.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Re: DNS - Network configuration

Turn off DHCP on router and re-run CEICW to allow the SBS server to handle
DHCP for the network. Only use the SBS server IP address on the SBS server
NIC. Set all workstation get automatic IP and then reboot each of them.

Install, update and run a scan with the SBS 2003 BPA to make sure there's no
problems with your configuration.

I performed the procedures you suggested with the following results:

* DHCP is disabled on router
* SBS Server is handling DHCP
* Removed the gateway address and 2nd DNS server from NIC configuration
* Ran CEICW, which completed successfully
* Set a workstation to Obtain IP address
* Rebooted server, then workstation
* Workstation did get IP address from server (list SBS 2003 server as DHCP,
DNS, and WINS server.)
*Tried to go to internet on workstation and it worked great.
* Server still can not access internet through Explorer and still returns
correct IP Address yet Request Time Out error at command prompt.

Re: DNS - Network configuration

From the OP's earlier post. and it looks OK. Maybe try a simple name
resolution to an external domain to see if that is working or is something
with IE on the server is hosed.

ping www.google.com

or nslookup www.google.com

Re: DNS - Network configuration

Maybe something in the firewall settings as his ping failed but worked for
me here out on another network.

OP, what is IE saying about not being able to connect? Does it work to
http://companyweb?

Re: DNS - Network configuration

Beterman.

I imagine that in over a month you've probably found a solution to this problem - or you're now bald.

I had exactly the same problem - I cannot promise that the cause is the same or not - but I did spend a full night working to find the solution.
If it can help someone else ...

I have a Dell PowerEdge 2900, Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU / 4090MB RAM running SBS 2003 Standard with 2 NICs. When I first installed the server, my aim was to configure one NIC as "LAN" and the other as "WAN" - but something went a little pear shaped during the CEIC wizard.

In order to get everything to work properly I had to abandon the 2 NICs and just use 1 of them - not a good solution on an SBS standard, as the firewall can only really work when both NICs are correctly configured.
... however, I ended up in the same boat as you did.

What happened ?
Apparently, during the initial CEICW, the firewall was switched on and ended up blocking everything. After running the CEICW again from scratch with just the 1 NIC, the firewall was dropped and I could access the network & web again.

I then re-ran the CEICW and configured the 2 NATs without any further problems.

I love my SBS, until things go wrong, and then I could kill it.
