Profile slow to load, but fast on terminal server - profile is small and roaming

I have a strange issue with a slow profile.

The user has a 200mb profile, roaming, stored on the server. They have a
second profile on the same server for terminal server sessions, the
users account shows both profiles properly mapped (in other words, they
don't use the same profile for both and they both point to different
shares).

If I wipe the local copy off the xp machine, it takes several minutes to
cache it and each time they logon/off it takes several minutes - so,
deleting it locally doesn't change anything.

The Actual Profile tab shows about 30MB, but the Documents and Settings
\Username folder is about 200MB for the problem user.

All other users on that same computer load fast and most have larger
profiles.

No other user has this problem on the same computer.

No errors in the event logs.

Problem follows user between local computers.

Profile on terminal server loads fast....

Outlook is NOT CACHED on local or terminal server.

Any ideas - I don't want to delete this profile and start over with this
user.

TIA!

Re: Profile slow to load, but fast on terminal server - profile is small and roaming

Hi Leythos:

We have to start somewhere. <g>

Since no other user on that same machine has the issue, guessing it is not
the machine or the network connections from machine to SBS.

Since the problem follows the user from machine to machine, guessing the
issue is related to the profile and / or its location on the SBS.

First two thoughts are that it is corrupted, or becoming corrupt, and/or
that the AV is scanning that folder more than others for reasons I can't
explain.

Next thought has to do with fragmentation.

And I have worked with you in this space long enough to be fairly sure that
it is none of the above. <g>

Maybe this will stimulate some wheels to turn for you or others.

In the past I've just deleted the account, deleted the traces of the
profile and then created a new account, but I didn't want to do that
this time - thinking I might be able to determine the actual cause (with
help).

This started about 4 weeks ago, but I can't find anything that changed
around that time and it's only this one user.

Any mapped drives on the problematic profile?
