Joining Windows Server 2003 std as an additional domain controller

Dear SBS'ers,

I've found a documentation how to join a computer running Windows
Server 2008 as an additional domain controller at
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l...31(WS.10).aspx

How about Windows server 2003 std ? is it possible to join window
sserver 2003 std as an additional domain controller in SBS 2003
domain?

Any clue is appreciated.

Best,

Icel

Icel, you can add an additional domain controler as long as the SBS hold all
the AD roles.

Good Luck

But how? Just as simple as add server wizard in sbs or joining server
2003 to SBS domain?

I want to use server 2003 machine as a fileserver using user CAL in
SBS 2003. is it possible?

I have change license type in server 2003 machine as per device.

Create a new server account object in Server Manager and join the server to
the domain using /connectcomputer.
You can dcpromo it later if you wish.

Yes.

Stop and disable license logging service on your regular W2003 box. It is
buggy and isn't mandatory.

If you just want it for a file server you don't need to make it a DC just a
member server of the SBS domain.

I am with SteveB on this one, there no reason for a backup domain controler
unless you need it, branch office perhaps. You said also that you have a
window server 2008 in your domain, if you want a backup domain controler you
can use read only DC role from w2k8. By aware that you need to exetend the
AD schema using Adprep comand from your w2k8 DVD.

standard method using dcpromo. Adding the server as a member server can be
helpfull.

What isn't possible is to somehow add an existing domain controller for some
other domain to the SBS domain. You probably were not intending that, but
just to make it clear.

While I'm along with the theme of (almost always) not *needing* additional
DC's with SBS, note that a 2008 RODC can only replicate with server 2008
bridgeheads. An SBS2003 server will not suffice.
